Incuse devices can be tricky. The rule of hub doubling that enlarges raised devices is still true. On raised devices machine damage reduces the overall size of the devices. The first ones on the Lincoln Cent series were the VDB starting in 1918 as incuse on the shoulder. When we started seeing these devices enlarged or missing we wondered how that can happen?

Then the Shield cents gave us another clue about these. On Machine Doubling (because the devices are raised on the die) started to note that these incuse devices were enlarged and the doubled dies were reduced. (just the opposite of the raised devices.

Now we have the ATB (America The Beautiful) series and the devices on the ring on the outside edge of the reverse has many devices which can cover a large pattern of the coin. Even the slightest movement of the dies can enlarge them. We think we found a doubled die and guess what....

So you might ask how many quarters did I have to go through to find these MD incuse devices? My Grandson gave me about 25 of the ATB Quarters and about half of them show the MD. So they are very common.

Fantastic puff piece coop. This would explain why there are not that many doubled dies within the ATB series that show distinct doubling on the date. A lot of interesting doubled dies are starting to show up in the series, most recently the barrage of 2015-P Homestead quarters that exhibit a wide variety of doubled dies in the window design on the reverse. Most are comparing this to the 2009 Lincoln multiple finger doubling on the commemorative cents because of the amount of doubled dies that have been uncovered.

Egh I don't think it's close to the 2009 LMC yet there is only like 7 or 8 listed and I know of about 5 more that I found but won't be submitting. We will see though it will be interesting
Rest in Peace

I forgot to mention the whole reason I commented on this post. It's funny when you look up double dies on ebay for the newer quarters there is a whole bunch like what coop I'd referring to being sold and passed off as double dies. Funny thing is people have paid a premium for a Machine Doubling but won't pay but a dollar for the minor doubling on the homestead quarters
