Again, this is going to show my lack of knowledge with collecting. I was CRH the other day and came across a 1998-D quarter that had the mirror-like shine of a proof. I have never come across this before. I am going to try and get pics when I get home tonight. I am sure this is a simple answer but I am not sure. It looks a lot like a proof but it doesn't have an "s" mintmark.

Do the devices look the same as the fields?

Does it look polished?

Could it have been plated?

I agree with polished or dipped just by the description. But you know, this thread is useless without pics!

No reason why the first strikes off a new Business Strike die can't have mirrored fields. Not saying it's that without images, but it should be in the differential.

Many mint set '98-D quarters were struck on burnished planchets. These can also be very PL with mirror like surfaces sometimes.
Time don't fly, it bounds and leaps.

Proof is not a condition, it is how the coin was made. Look at the overall coin, not just the condition, to determine if it a proof. Shiny mirrors are nice, but also look for sharp squared rims.

At some places where auto polishes are demonstrated they use coins to show just how good their products are. Then those coins are put back into circ.
