What do you use to clean your finds?

I obviously don't care about cleaning my clad coin finds, but I hope to find a Mercury dime one day and I did find a Wheat penny.

I found a ring and used my wife's old jewelry cleaner, but figured there is probably a better way.

I do clean up the clad a little before rolling it ,, I use a vibrating rock tumbler/shell brass cleaner/clad coin finds cleaner LOL

I use a mixture of fish tank gravel and nut shells mixed with a little water and dish soap or Ivory bar soap flakes.

for jewelry it depends on what it is ,,gold and silver I sometimes take to a jeweler and have it cleaned in their sonic tank ,,sometimes I use tooth paste and a brush after soaking in water and soap to soften all the hard deposits .

Silver coins usually don't need to be cleaned, wheaties on the other hand....usually I just rinse them off unless it's so bad I can't read the date, then they go into my rock tumbler.

My wife has a small ultrasonic jewelry cleaner that I use sometimes, but again silver & gold jewelry usually come out of the ground pretty clean.

Now I have a reason to buy a rock tumbler!

My oldest daughter is 2 1/2, and I tried to convince my wife that a rock tumbler would be a fun learning toy for me, ummh, umm I mean for my daughter.

That argument failed, but know I have a new angle.

I used to use a rock tumbler for clad. But now use simple salt and white vinegar in a small plastic jar, i.e. mayonaisse or peanut butter. Shake, rattle, and roll for a few minutes. They come out very nice. Dont mix cents with em. If you wanna wash off your common lincolns, tie in an old athletic sock and throw it in the washer. But never clean a coin with any value like above.

Since I don't own a tumbler yet, I think I will try the salt and vinegar. Thanks for the tip.
