A cousin that I had never met found eight army ammo boxes of coins while tearing down a house. He asked me to sort through his find, and to dispose of some of it. I wrote this up in November, 2014 for a magazine called "American Digger." The actual value of what was found was about 25 % bigger than what the article stated.

The article can be found at

Man, I had a blast.

Sandy... Bought an el cheapo metal detector not long ago that I don't know (much) how to use. I need to connect with someone who does.
Say, have you ever had any contact with professional archaeologists about something you found? I'm working on an article...

Great story.... thanks for posting it

I like seeing what other collectors have put together.
Anyone would be jumping for joy to find a treasure that
size.

In my experience, of years of looking through other
collections. I think there would be more, at least
another can. Most collection this size would have some
better date coins. And that many Halves, quarters and
dimes ... there would be more dollar coins.

I am not saying this to be negative ... I am saying it
to say ... go look for more ... chances are a collection
like that .. would have the really good coins in a
separate container.

GR58, My sense is that this guy was never a collector. I think he (late in life) started buying stuff, but he bought all kinds of odds and ends, and as you note, almost no quality stuff.

You could be wrong, but if so, the "other stuff" is now buried under the street, or under one of several houses.

Any ideas on what to do with stacks of rusted steelies? I wondered about salting a park or beach, give the metal detectors a thrill. (Seems like a good idea, and also kinda unfair.)
