I have a question... I saw a quite expensive coin at a show and ended up passing on it. I regretted it, so I went back and it was sold. About a month or two later, they have the very same coin for sale. Is there some kind of dealer secret here? Thanks.

I think it would help if you would identify the coin. If it's slabbed by one of the TPGs then you could obviously tell it was the same coin. Or, maybe they just have a friendly return policy.

A dealer will give right of approval to their better customers. The customer may have decided after thinking for a bit that it wasn't the coin for them.

Might have been sold to another dealer, then a new deal was made and it ended-up back with the last.

Hard to respond with out more details, or knowing you and the dealer.

In situation like this ... I ask the dealer what happened.

Most times there is a good explanation.

And then there is the chance that a person does not have a
good relationship with the dealer.

That is when you have to do some self reflecting, think about
if I am doing anything that makes this dealer not want to deal
with me ... And give me good deals.

Never discount the well documented fact that some people are not rational.

So many possibilities.
1. Someone asked him to put it aside and he would get it later and never did.
2. Maybe thought he might keep if for himself.
3. First purchaser brought it back.
4. Different coin but looked the same.
And many other possibilities.
A good example of what some people are like is at a flea market a seller had several pads of gloss print paper of computers for $1. I bought that one and asked if they had more. The answer was yes but at home. Why should I bring it here? People keep buying it.

thanks for the replies. yes, same dealer and same coin. it was slabbed and the toning on a key date like this one is one to never forget. the dealer will be at a show coming up, so i'll ask him then. I was just curious if there was "inventory clearing" for tax reasons... I have no idea. I'm sure it's something simple like the person asked for it to be on hold and never paid. i'll post a picture if I end up buying it.

I asked because I was pretty mad at myself for not pulling the trigger the first time and was shocked to see it back. thought I'd never see it again. pretty new at this too, so I just wanted to ask.

Well, you pulled the trigger this time, right?

Seeing it back there was a hint. The coin wants to be with you.

Truth. I let one go once and would have been all over it had it showed up again.

I would not concern myself as to how this coin ended up in his case a month later. The fact is he has it, if you still want it just buy it and be done with it. If he tells you it is sold again then ask him why is it out in his case and why he will not sell it to you.

Sounds cruel but possibly the dealer just didn't like you.
