I use 1/4" x 1" aluminum bar stock. You'll need to figure out the right length to get the height you need.

Well, did you win the auction? I saw it sold for $92, a good price.

Yep. I'll probably get it next week. $107 shipped. I didn't think I'd have bid it up to much so I didn't use my usual ebay strategy. Ordered AL bar stock last night. My plan is to drill holes and countersink the oustide to get the bolt flush. My only concern is will the countersink weaken the bar. I'm really happy it comes with a dust cover so I can keep it set up and ready to go.
I also bought a $9.00 50mm lens to try out for close up shots. The set up is a big improvement over what I was using (50mm lens with a 4x or 10x macro filter on the end). But as always the biggest challenge is a consistent lighting setup.
I have only been shooting with the Nikon with no tether. I tried a Nikon tethering trial software and was disappointed. The image was not clear enough to focus from the screen. The canon mount will arrive today. So I'm excited about that.
One other note Canon USA will now allow you to download the utilities software without the original disk. You just need to put the cameras serial # in.

I don't think it will be a problem myself if you are using 1/4 stock.

I agree, 1/4" stock is pretty strong. I countersink 50% with no issue.

Regarding the focusing issue, usually the full-screen image is not so clear. Most tethering programs have a 100% pixel view "magnifier" function, and in this mode they provide full resolution that you can use for focusing.

I went a bit overboard and used 1/4"x 1"and 1/4"x 2" to extend the A stand and mount my bellows. It gave me a little more "meat" to add threads.

I think someone would be hard pressed to come up with something better than your design. I just wish I would have paid better attention to your suggestions on bellows. The Canon bellows is definitely not the front runner.

Ok, So the first canon FD to EF adapter didn't fit the camera. So I just got a direct Exakta to EF adapter it fits and it's thinner (1 adapter instead of 2). The removal of just 3.5mm makes an enormous difference. I can now fit a Morgan with the 75mm lens. I haven't even tried the 105mm.
Going from the Nikon d90 to canon EOS XS is a change. I have a step down in megapixels 12.x to 10.5. But I get to tether. And of course a new WB system, etc to relearn. My verdict is tethering is great. The no.1 reason is focus. I can zoom to 100% and get the focus spot on. shooting manual means camera adjustment on screen is only WB and shutter speed and exp. compensation. The hands free shutter vs using a 2 sec delay on the Nikon is nice, but not a deal maker/breaker. So I'm waiting for my microscope stand to arrive and I just got the AL bar stock. I'll try to record the steps in modifying the stand for others. I'll post samples tonight of my Canon XS shots.

Next up. Microscope objective. Why is the cone shaped RMS adapter recommended? Would the flat m39 to RMS work just as well? It is after all connected to an adjustable bellows. Or is the cone shape only for those using extension tubes?
I have my microscope stand working with the 75mm lens. I'm going to drill a farther hole for the 105mm after I get a few shots with this set up. So far this stand is great. Rock solid and very versatile in terms of heights since I can slide the whole thing up and down the vertical pole.

The cone adapter helps with lighting, making it easier to get the Jansjos close to the objective, but you can make it work with flat adapter as well. Cone also gives extra extension if needed, though this is less important with bellows.

PS: should check in with Dar on his progress with the M5.
