This is a small holder anacs and a decent VAM. Can you guys figure it out the VAM and grade. Also, I am not to familiar with what this VAM is worth in this grade, so any thoughts on that would help. I think I did good. These are seller pics.

65+ and this one I believe the VAM is for that notched R in the motto. Need one of the van experts for sure though.

I'm wondering if it was dipped to remove the toning way back when?

This is virtually impossible to attribute based on what is seen here, especially since the very most important factor in 1880's - the date - is blurred. I will guess it's VAM-11, but based only upon the slant of the date, and I'm not going through 100 1880-S VAMs with no clear closeup of the date sufficient to show doubling.

If it's VAM-11, and the high 64, maybe 65, it seems to deserve, there will not likely be much premium. The MS65 population of these is well over 100, there are MS67's in the Census, and the last attributed MS65 VAM-11 at Heritage did not break $150 even with the Buyer Premium.

Dave it is VAM-11

It is in a 63 holder though, so I paided a bit less then 60 for it. I know the pop for this VAM is high, but being a Hot 50 VAM, I figured 60 was a good price. Can't wait to get and take my own pics.

Cascade, my guess is that the toning is due to the fact it is in an old small anacs holder.

60's an excellent price since it's undergraded.

That's well-bought. The slab alone is a sale point.

UNdergraded by todays standards, back when this coin was slabbed MS63 was right on the money, grading standards have changed over the years, this coin is a good example of that.

Aren't gradings TOUGHER now that they can get a much better look at the coin?
I would have called that a 64 with a potential for 65 before I saw the result. Lovely eagle.

Eyeballs haven't changed.

Only standards, and those standards have appeared to cycle. Initially, TPG grading was pretty strict. Over the years, they loosened up enough for a major dealer (John Albanese, who was not only in on the founding of both PCGS and NGC, but was NGC's first President) to found CAC because he couldn't trust slab grades enough to sell/buy them between fellow dealers sight-unseen. That's caused TPG's to tighten up again to the point where if this one was cracked it probably wouldn't go over 63 again.

I got it today in the mail. The sellers pics were accurate, and I have to say I think if regraded today it probably would come back a 63 again, but still a nice example in 63.

Here are my pics. They are not that great. I need more room so I can set up lights better and take better pics.

Your pics are plenty good enough to make your point valid. Even so, it's got a decent shot at 64. And it's still quite nicely bought at the price, especially considering the premium that slab will fetch with it.
