Just opened 4 uncirculated sets. Each set has 2-4 coins with noticible contact marks. I don't remember seeing this degree of marks on previous years. Anyone else with the same experience? Sound I send them back and try for replacements, or just accept this?

So this is what the Mint said in December of 2010:

"United States Mint Uncirculated Coins Get a New Look in 2011

Satin finish to be discontinued; brilliant finish reinstated
WASHINGTON - The United States Mint today announced that it is discontinuing the satin finish on numismatic uncirculated coins produced for the United States Mint Uncirculated Coin SetŪ and other products. Instead, beginning in 2011, uncirculated-quality coins will feature a brilliant finish.

The United States Mint began using the satin finish for its uncirculated coins in 2005 to be consistent with other products in its portfolio, such as commemorative coins. The satin finish, however, highlights surface marks that inherently result from the coin-handling systems. Although the United States Mint modified the process to improve the coin appearance, there is no cost-effective way to completely eliminate the coin-on-coin contact that causes surface nicks. As a result, the United States Mint will revert back to the brilliant finish used on uncirculated coins prior to 2005. This change will result in more aesthetically pleasing coins with a finish that does not highlight surface flaws. It will only be featured on uncirculated-quality one-cent, 5-cent, dime, quarter-dollar, half-dollar and dollar coins."

I guess they decided they can make any kind of junk now and that the brilliant finish will hide it. For the money they charge for a Mint Set the coins should be hanlded with gloves as they leave the press.

I'm ordering my sets today. I hope they're all decent. If not, I'll send the bad ones back.

They could handle them just like the proofs. In other words, don't let them contact each other! If they're so worried about cost effectiveness, how about offering a "Premium" mint set. It would have all the same coins and be struck just like the regular business strikes, but would be handled like the proofs to eliminate contact marks and could even be put in hard plastic like the proof sets. I know I'd pay a premium to get real MS-69 and MS-70 coins.

I opened mine this weekend and thought the same thing. Then it occurred to me that these sets are merely uncirculated coins. That being said, they're really just the same coins that come out of the mint as coins meant for circulation except that they put them in a package and don't expect them to get circulated so no additional quality is expected.

Technically, if you ordered a roll of pennies from the mint, they should also contain contact marks and not be held to the highest quality. It's as they state, uncirculated coins from the mint, which basically means they're uncirculated and contain no mint errors.

I decided to return two sets. 3 of the 4 Denver sets were good, so that was easy, but the Philly sets turned on figuring out which 2 sets were the worst, to keep the other 2!

But the problem is that other than the halves and small dollars, you can't order rolls directly from the mint. If you could, I'd buy rolls instead, pick the best ones out of the rolls and then spend the rest.

BTW, I did order 250 Sacagawea dollars today directly from the mint. They come in rolls of 25. I'm going to open up one roll and see what the best, worst and average conditions are. I'll save the rest and sell them on ebay in a few years.

This kind of goes to show that the whole first day of issue or first month of issue thing that the 3rd party grading services promote is pretty much meaningless. My recent personal experience with the 2015 proof sets that I ordered also goes to show the same thing. I had better luck with quality ordering at the end of the year last time.

I agree. The sets I have received both last year AND this year were/are horrible. I have had to send back 85-90% to be replaced and some more then once.

Even Proof sets and commen's.

You call to tell them your sending them back and they respond with disbelief.

And Now that they have changed the way you have to Re-order now your money is in limbo until the "get around" to sending you replacements.

Really irk's me.

Your all scarring me. Every year I order many of those for Christmas Presents. And naturally I don't open them, just Christmas rap them. I sure don't want people to say, Thanks, lousy presents.

You've never looked at sets from the late 60's and 70's have you?

Ordered my sets today. We'll see about the quality when they come in.

I did notice that the price of the 2015 set ($28.95) is $1 more than the 2014 set. Yay.

i recently sent back a proof set and they said I would have to re-order.
They also said they would send the next shipment sans postage, but the last 3 orders have included postage fees.
I have a subscription for 1 circ set, 1 proof, 1 silver proof and 1 of each of the pucks.

My set was fine. I've been ordering a set since 1999 and have only ever sent one set back. Maybe I am not as picky. Or maybe just lucky?
