Is this actually a "Hoof in 6"? Sure, it's right against the 6, but I've seen another version too. Were there two dies that qualify for this variety? See the images below, and I'd appreciate your thoughts...thanks!

KurtS, I believe that the hoof has to be in the circle of the 6 to be a hoof over 6, there are 8 varieties of the 1946 reverse.

Thanks, although they punched the 6 into the hoof, that's what I thought--there is only one die for this variety.
This coin was only $5, so I had to check. But, some guy on ebay is selling this exact one as a "Hoof in 6" for $500.

KurtS, that's a cool illustration you posted. What I'd like to know is, how do you create this picture-in-picture effect?

Jello, thanks!
I did that in photoshop...I've used the program for 15 years.
I should do a brief tutorial sometime for using the software to find varieties.

Thanks! I put up a brief tutorial on a recent discovery in the US varieties section. It's not much of a photoshop tutorial, but it does suggest the capabilities of using it to find varieties. I figured there are a lot better books and onlin4 tutorials than me spending the time to do it again. That said, I'm happy to answer any questions people might have.

Hi! I've used a Mac for years, but now I'm transferred all my work to PC.

Kurt, what camera and lighting technique are you using to capture your coins so well. I think I have the right cameras but I think my lighting needs more work. I tried the milk cartoon with some good results, but think I need a more powerful light source.
