I love modern coins, because most of the modern sets can be
completed in high grade coins with out having any super high
value coins.

Here is the but, once you start doing all the coins it does add up.
With BU .. Proof and special sets coins, my budget does notice
the amount going out.

I have been thinking of stopping my sets of cent, nickel, half dollar
and dollar coins. And just keep my quarter sets going.

It sort of makes since.
Stop at 2009 for Lincoln's.
Stop at 2006 for Jeffersons.
Stop at 2012 for dimes ( I think that is where my Dansco ran out.)
Stop at 2012 for Kennedy halves (again that is where my Dansco stops)
Stop at 2016 for dollars.

This would save some, not having to buy mint set, clad and silver proof set.

Of course after next year, if we're lucky the sets might come down in price.

What do other members think the sets prices will be once the mint
Stops making four president dollars every year?

Four coins for proof sets ... Eight for the mint sets.

Also for me, I like to get
Any special sets
Proof and burnished silver eagle
Any UNC commemorative dollars
Four bullion silver Eagles for my Dansco's

At the same time have several classic and type sets going.
Started a silver Maple leaf Dansco yesterday.

Now they tell me (mint and CCF) of the four C and C sets this year.

It is getting hard to stay focused.

I might need a vacation

I stopped getting stuff directly from the US mint around 1991. There were too many sets or various types, and the cost of getting them, including the gold, was getting out of hand.

I was always more interested in older coins anyway.

I too have thought of this recently... I would love to continue my Kennedy album but in order to get them I would either have to pay double to triple the melt value for the brand new years' silver proofs or buy the entire set... I think I may too just stick to the quarters (new designs every year) and at least finish my first Kennedy album. That way I could really focus on my 7070 and catching up on the silver proof State Quarters. Especially since it does seem like the mint may be heading towards what the other world mints do and have a coin with a special finish for just about anything...

It is to costly to try and collect everything. I try to keep my modern collection to silver/gold related coins and any set that I find appealing. I don't see the price of mint sets going down very much ($4-$8) after the Presidential dollars are done. I'm sure the mint will figure something out to try and keep the cost up.

I understand ... The not liking buying the whole set just for one coin.

That is the part .... Wondering what the price of the set will be,
once the Presidential dollar series is complete.

Maybe age has a part in it also. If I was younger I could see collecting
All the coins. As I am older ... I am thinking leave some of it for the
next generation. Meaning who I leave my collection to.

Not really complaining g about modern coins ... I love them.

Just trying to figure out the best way for me to focus.

Its a hard decision to make. We love all coins that's why we do what we do, but our taste can change. What coins bring you the most joy? Which ones can you sit and admire for a long periods of time. Remember to breathe, you don't have to do anything. If you have to make a decision, don't buy anything for a week or two. Lay the money back and relax. You might be over thinking it. Vacation time my friend.

That makes my head

For the past few years I have been working part time in
a coin shop. I buy coins three or four days a week, every week.

Which set or sets do you find you look at and think about the most? If you can quickly name one or two sets in response, I would suggest keeping them going and discontinuing the others.

Focus is a difficult thing in this hobby, there is so much to enjoy! I've gotten better at it over the years, but new things continue to catch my eye. When I encounter something new that intrigues me, I spend some time learning about it before making any purchases. If the interest in obtaining the item(s) is still there a month or two later, I make the purchase. Many times the initial interest has faded a bit by then and I decide not to pursue it for my collection.

Good luck!

Interesting way to look at this situation.

For the past year, I find myself going back to Morgan dollars and my type sets the most.

I have Dansco for
U.S type
Canada
Mexico
Japan

For the modern coins the series I look at the most are quarters.

For the others. Putting together my Jefferson was a lot
of fun. Nice challenge trying to find better grade coins
and not having to spend big money.

But now, about the only time I look at the Lincoln's,
Jefferson, Roosevelt's, Kennedy's, Sac and President
coins is when I am putting the new coins in every year.

Also, I don't have the current pages for dimes and half dollars. So I just put those coins into 2X2's thinking I
will put them into the albums once I get the new pages.

Not sure I can stop collecting them, because .. there is that need to have complete sets. but it might be the right
thing to do for me.

If you work at a coin shop though your question is a touch like Norm on cheers saying "I think I wanna cut down on my drinking"

There's people out there who have the money to collect all US coins and maybe even all Canadian coins and when you say you cant afford some or something like that it makes me sad to hear because we all of coarse are going to die one day and I personally do not want to die without some various coins. Other things too like getting the time and money to travel to where you want to go in the world (That you only have your own life to do it in) and if you have kids explaining to your boss that if you don't spend time with them that they will grow up bad.

I have always not like modern coins, like everything else I see them as "fake" and am surprised that they were not minted in China. They mint too much of'em and then at the same time they make sets and things like that.

I hear what your saying Cascade.

It is so hard to try and do what is logical. Which might be
to cut back on some modern coins and use those funds to
purchase more/better classic coins.

But then I see those new proof and mint sets sitting on the shelves,
at the coin shop ... it's like .. oh shiny .. got to have them .. and logic goes away for another year.

Glad your thinking about stopping collecting some coins. Wish more people would do the same. This makes it much easier for me that collects everything.
