So I went to a show today and got some nice coins. A few walking liberties, a Booker T Washignton half, and a 40% Kennedy half. Some of more interesting ones were a 1833 large cent, and the coin you came here for, the 1803 large cent. The dealer who sold me it told me that he couldn't evaluate it, and I could have possibly bought a $200 coin. Though unlikely, I just wanted you guys to help me get a variety, and a grade. (His grade was net AG)

Things to consider:
In hand, you can faintly see "liberty" on the obverse
I got this for $50
Here are your pictures

And now the story. Well, it's more of what I did at the show. There was this early copper guy, and did he have some stuff! He had a chain cent, a cool tree shilling from the 1600s, and if I remember., he had a few VERY expensive things. One thing I remember was 25 grand. I have no idea why he doesn't just put em up for auction . Anyways, he told me take a seat because he was gonna show me some stuff. Long story short, I was allowed to hold a 1796 liberty cap cent, without a holder or anything. As a YN, this is one of the coolest things that had happened to me

IMO, you overpaid for the large cent. It grades Fair details, which would make it worth $10-15+, depending on the variety. But your story is priceless.

Was the dealer's name McCawley or Grellman or Butternut? I know they had pretty impressive stuff for sale when I met them at a coin show.

None of these folks would claim they "could not evaluate it"

This is he most common Draped Bust and yes you overpaid. However, if you like it that is all that matters.

I honestly don't care if I overpaid, as this is one of the first large cent I have gotten. The fact that it was used in transactions possibly, or was used by a president, or any other thing, astonishes me. It's over 200 years old, it's like a piece of history.

If I read this right, you never stated what you paid. You said he said you "could" be buying a $200 coin. So, what did you pay?

I would sell one like this for about $20-25 so yes, a little high.

If you get a chance to see Tom Reynolds and his inventory, it will blow your mind.
He is a true old schooler and friend. He does not believe in slobbed coins. He has some of the nicest high grade rare stuff I've ever seen.
I'm talking raw AU Chains, High MS Draped Bust LC's.

Cool story and I'm glad you had a great time!

Sounds like the dealer took advantage of you by selling it for over double retail value. I would be hesitant to do further business there. When I was a YN I got ripped off a few times from dealers, so be a bit more careful. We will help guide you in the forums.

Thanks for posting.

I'd just say I shouldn't take those huge risks with "unknown variety" coins. The dealer did however have some good advice, such as "a dealer does not know absolutly everything about his stuff." However, there is a bright side to everything. I got some walking libertys that look VF-XF for $9 each. The incredible bargain bin, everybody.

NickelCollector, don't mean to be a bummer but VF/XF Walkers are $7 retail (if you buy 50+ or them). Otherwise they are still $7.50 each. That's retail.
