I am considering buying a complete set of State Quarters in a Dansco album all BU condition. I know many were minted and the quarters from 1999 to 2008 are worth .25 cents. What is considered a fair price on these in BU condition? I don't have tons to invest and don't want to over pay. Thoughts and advise are most welcome.

If you have the time, start by buying rolls of quarters from the bank for face value and search through them for uncirculated examples of the quarters you are looking for. That would be the cheapest way.

Happy to see another member interested in State Quarters

I think you should be able to find BU State Quarters at good coin shops,
coin show or on CCF in the .50 to .75 each range.

Of course fir CCF ... You will have to have enough posts.

Thank you, eagle_eye_18 & GR58 for the advice.
I do some coin roll hunting, but mostly for cents and dimes. More LMC than anything else. I love digging through a box a week. I am kind of addicted to it. We do have a local shop I will give them a holler after work.

If you truly desire "honest" BU quarters, then I recommend that you ONLY buy them from original mint sets. I've mentioned this before, but I've always considered the highest grade available from circulated coins (coin roll hunting) is an "AU".

I recently bought some " State Quarters" albums that require "S" and "Silver S" types, so I am starting from zero to fill those. I acquired some recent "Grey Sheets" from a friend to see what prices would be fair to buy the 112 coins I now need. I only wrote my list for the proof types, so I can't help you with a pricelist for the "P" and "D" types, but they should be far less than RedBook pricing.

It would certainly be more fun to build the set yourself, but I would not fault you for buying one already complete.

It is probably best to look through completed sales to see what people are spending on these. That being said, using GR58's estimate, I would expect to pay between $50 and $75 for a P and D set.

The issue with trying to complete the series from CRH is that most State Quarters are easily affected by contact marks (just look at the average Wyoming quarter in circulation) and even BU rolls were fed through an industrial counter at least once. Even if your coin was pulled from a BU roll, sat in an album, pulled, and turned in at the bank, that's a minimum of 2 trips through a machine that isn't designed to be gentle with coins.

That said, if you are patient, you can get 95% of your set in "almost" BU for face from the steady stream of dumped quarter maps. Otherwise, I would say that $35-50 is fair for a complete circulation set in MS 60-64, provided you don't want the varieties or satin coins.

The problem with assembling from mint sets is that the sets from 2005 - 2010 did not use the normal 'brilliant' circulated finish, but were instead done with a 'satin' finish. I plan to get my uncirculated state issues from 2005 - 2008 (and the territories of 2009) through purchasing examples from mint rolls.

Right now I have mint set examples from 1999-2004, and nice circulated examples of all the rest except a 2009 DC from Denver. That one has eluded me.

$1 per coin for BU is not uncommon. But you could buy a whole set for much cheaper as they were sold quite often as gift sets. I received one as a gift and I don't think it cost more than $40 including the folder. (Of course the folder yellow toned all of them, but that is a different story)

If you are worried about overpaying, I'd source a complete set on ebay. Should be able to do so for under $50.

If you think about it, you won't find any truly uncirculated ones from the bank as they have been circulating for as much as 16 years.

Here's an update y'all. After scouring my LCS and doing some research on ebay I came across a listing for a date set in a dansco album that was put together from unc mint sets. The price was beyond fair with returns accepted and great reviews on the seller so I jumped on it like a starving dog on a cheeseburger. Can't wait to get it here and I will post pics.

State Quarters are one case where it's easy to buy an album filled with BU examples, for a reasonable cost if you shop around.

I did assemble three date-only albums of BU Uncirculated (Denver Mint) State Quarters for face value + album cost, but these were all cherry-picked from BU rolls I got from the bank from 1999-2008.

My Philly Mint album is all from State Quarters received in change, so they vary from high-AU down to VF.

It would now take a lot of bank box searching to fill an album with BU or even high-AU specimens from circulation. There were tons of BU State Quarters in change during the Great Recession, but they seem to have dried up.

Just recently got a roll of quarters while cashiering. Inside, about $3 - $4 worth of the quarters were some very lightly to un-circulated State Quarters. Even found a Lousiana proof quarter in it. Methinks somebody's collection got dumped.

I tried to sell my P&D 1999-2008 in dansco pages to no avail on ebay for almost a month until last weekend someone finally purchase it on ebay for $45.95 shipped...

It was easier to sell the P&D separately for $25 than selling them both for $40 in dansco pages! I was listing it as the cheapest too!

Proof clad version sold for around $45...

The only one worth it is the silver proof version.
