I must say I have not seen a huge 9 like that before. Almost looks as if someone reamed out the center of the 9.

The first step in figuring out errors is deciding whether what you're looking at was possible at the Mint. This coin doesn't pass that initial test (nothing at the Mint could do this), so then you start thinking about what could have created it elsewhere. It's a pretty cool piece of work all the same.

Can you see and maybe try to gauge if there is a hole in there 9. Say as if someone tried making a ringer out of the coin and the start point was the center on the 9 for some odd reason.

Never seen anything like that, almost look like somebody hammer with a fine nail and push it out? Hows the reverse look?

So now we have a LARGE date Mercury dime?
To bad it is something someone did for fun. Sure looks real though. I'd love to have one like that for my collection.

Back in 1988 I took a penny and made the 8s look like 0s to make a "1900 LCM" as a joke. A tiny nail was used - with the point blunted and carefully ground, inserted into the inside of the 8, and the sides of the 8 became pushed out to resemble 0s. Don't have pics - almost 20 years ago and it was just for fun. But the 8;s did look like 0's - similar to how it looks the hole in the 9 was made bigger on yours.
