The frightening thing is that like the real thing it still cost more than one cent to make.

That's funny because my little brother told me he was learning about cents in his 2nd grade class last week so I gave him 30 steel and 30 wheat cents to take to class and give one each to every kid. Maybe they'll spend em or maybe they'll get hooked early Or maybe a parent collects and he's scratching his head now thinking how his kid can 1up my brother. If nickles come along I'll give him 30 war nicks to pass out

I'm completely surprised that there's even a market for plastic play money anymore... Quarters are the only point where the fake coins might become cheaper than the real thing.
And I agree, that is a good idea Cascade! I had a few regulars at my old cashier job who would always buy up my halves, $1 and bicentennial coins for their classroom... I was always happy to know that teachers take an interest in such things!

There is a post, which I cannot find at the moment, with a photo depicting a bag of 100 plastic cents with (if I recall correctly) a price tag of $3.49.

I had a teacher buy all of my foreign coins at an antique faire once to take to school for his lessons. I gave him a good deal on the lot. Must have been close to 200 coins. He was very happy to get quite an assortment of countries.
