I've heard about these and as I was going through a few handfuls of LWC I came across this and knew exactly what it was at fitst sight from an old article or maybe even a thread here. That's how my memory works and why I am young and watch shows like antiques roadshow (both countries), history detectives and such... Never know in my biz when a random tidbit will come in handy! But I digress, back to the coin, look at how they even crudely attempted to carve a Reeder edge into it as well... so, thoughts? are these uncommon?

Yikes. Wonder if it was noticed early on.

Very cool! I can hardly imagine the effort being worth 9 cents though, even in the 50s. I highly doubt that it would bring any significant premium, since it's impossible to prove that it's contemporary.

Also, didn't vending machines in the 50s still check conductivity? That was the whole reason for using manganese in the War Nickels, if I recall.

Not too much effort with a grinding wheel... and 9 cents was worth a lot more back then. Think about it - a nickel for a Pepsi back then, and now we have to spend over a buck for a bottle - edging up to 1.50 per bottle (granted its almost double the volume of the old 12 oz bottle also.)!

I think there are a lot of them out there. Remember all of the cool stuff was in the 10 cent gumball machines and that was a lot of money for a kid in the 50's! If I remember right, the telephones only cost a nickel, so you could make a call with one of these and get a nickel back in change!

Yep, even back in the '60s gramma gave my brother and I a silver dime each. We walked up town to the corner store, crazy the amount of candy .10c would buy!
