So tonight on icollector there was an ICCS Vic. North MS 66 1961 dime that sold for $50...
So I figured I would do a bit of digging as the Victoria North auction was still clear in my mind...
The only 1961 MS 66 coin listed there sold for $95...
Only issue is from the pictures on icollector, it doesn't look like it's the same coin but it's pretty hard to say for certain...
Just can't believe that less than one year from the Vic North auction and there's THAT much depreciation in the same material...
Anyone have their opinion on this one?
From the looks at the "Lower Canada" auction many items went far below the price point I see at Coins and Canada..

AG that is the coin dealer disease known as "lacka fundus" . A very common affliction among coin dealers who get caught up in the other sickness commonly known as "Auction Fever" This is a rather frequent occurrence when one bites off way more than they can chew. I can guarantee you that there will be a lot of people very surprised that they cannot sell the Landon and Victoria North stuff for a big profit in the current market. A patient coin dealer ( with fairly deep pockets) will do well over the long term a coin dealer who had to borrow for this sale ( and there were more than a few! ) ummm..............help the bank just called.! It took me a long time to figure it out, but having fairly deep pockets does keep one out of trouble. I have sold a few of the lots I bought for a decent profit, others I will keep and admire for awhile. It is funny at sales like the February sale in Toronto, the very best lots are almost invariably the bulk lots or the less sexy lots! The super high end Canadian collector is just not answering the phone these days. As I have mentioned to you and on this forum that is why deal primarily in the US these days!

Well those are two mighty bad diseases to have I have to admit! Trends has this coin around $150...
And normally I would imagine that the coin would go for a percentage of trends in the market of $115..
I'm not sure of the pop reports... but at 66 I wouldn't imagine many in higher grades...

A little secret my friend.........there are many as yet ungraded rolls of Elizabeth young head out there, especially cents ,nickels and dimes. First everyone was looking for 65 coins and paying stupid money, then 66 for even stupider money, now it will take a 67 to get the right money. It is a tough business ,not for the faint of heart. One reason I love classic tried and true early collector coins in collector grade, VF to EF Vicky, Edward and GRV.

Yes... I kinda have found a place in my heart for Vickies.... they're fun and a lot of varieties... just from watching tonight's auction I couldn't get my head around a lot of the prices...
Maybe bad to have an auction on a Tues. night... Maybe not enough marketing for the items they had... or just maybe people are either saving or have spent their pennies already...
I'm totally still in the learning phase so the more exposure the better I think .. and so I watch a lot of auctions and see the results to prevent getting too burned when it comes time to make a buy...
But that dime was just one piece that really caught my attention..
How is CCCS as a coin grader? I noticed most of the items in this auction were graded by them... could that be a reason most items sold for 50% of trends?

I have never used Louie's grading service so I cannot really comment on CCCS. Only two coins in stock are GRV 25 cents 1917 and 1919 and both are nicely graded EF 45 .

Those all sound like pretty bad "over use" injuries to me GPD... Thankfully, while I have only been in this hobby a short period of time compaired to most on here.. I can say with certainty that I haven't met anyone as of yet with such ailments... That's one reason why I have really enjoyed this hobby.. When they call this the hobby of kings there's really a good reason.. many that I have corresponded with have been fantastic individuals.

Quote: How is CCCS as a coin grader? Quote: I have never used Louie's grading service so I cannot really comment on CCCS I've had a few hundred CCCS graded coins pass through my hands (and we still have many in our collection). I find them equivalent to ICCS for grading. I've heard there were a few 'inconsistencies' back in the early days so I take a closer look at anything in the old holders but haven't found any problems myself. By comparison I've handled several thousand ICCS and have found maybe a dozen problems; most of which are just certificate typos of the denomination or date.

I suspect a _lot_ of people bought into the hype of the Landon and Victoria North collection. Chuck Moore does know the auction business well...
I did not buy anything from that auction... the good pieces I want, will filter out eventually...

It was indeed easy to buy into the hype of the Landon Sale especially. To have a shot at coins that had never been offered to collectors and hidden away for nearly a hundred years is just too enticing. All of us who attended and bought stuff from the auction can always say we were a small part of Canadian Numismatic history. Indeed, no matter what Chuck Moore does in future, the Landon Sale will be for him a crowning achievement.

As a physician...I can confirm that "lacka fundus" is a potentially lethal affliction in the presence of "auction fever"...LOL...
I'm looking around and I get the feeling that many sellers trying to unload Landon coins are truly hurting. Victoria North, not so much. The silver didn't seem overpriced as much as the cents were.
The only Landon coin I bought was a reasonably priced 1c 1859 Wide 9/8 MS63 Triple G REGINA variety...which is now sitting in a nice CCCS Hard holder.
I agree with Roger...I too have my eye on a few Landon variety coins that I hope will eventually filter into the marketplace due to "lacka fundus" disease...

Me thinks that more than a few dealers bit off a bit more than they could chew. The market will eventually find a place for a lot of the uber high grade large cents but it could take awhile. CV is right the silver in the Landon sale was in essence a bargain compared to the copper. A BIG REASON for that was the fact it was close to early breakfast time when it came up for auction. The auction room was thinning out and a lot of dealers had shot their cash wad or bank limit . It is nice to know that the beauties I have locked away are all bought and paid for and can just sit until the right offer comes along. With no worries comes the luxury of no pressure.

That's a nice position to be in as a dealer Pac. I have to say that I was ticked off with the tokens going for such amounts... and I think I was happy enough to just get the 2nd last item that night... Unfortunately (or perhaps fortunately) my pockets really aren't that deep so I really wasn't even in a position to contest for all that nice bronze... I am happy with the newfie items I picked up even if there really isn't anything special about them.. they're certainly not top end coins but they fill a lot of holes that I have...and I'm basically at that level for collecting and only occasionally do I treat myself to a really nice piece...
