So, I went to an auction yesterday for the first time and got two boxes of Lincolns - supposedly 38s-46s. The one box did have those years, mostly in fine to very fine condition and pretty heavily picked over.

When I opened the second box, I soon realized that I made the best first auction purchase ever. There are about 40 coins in old cardboard holders, many in mint condition, including about 10 1969 S's. There are a couple IHP's, about a dozen from 1915-1929 .. but, when I saw a beautifully toned wheatie in a holder with partially ripped cello, I nearly fell off my chair when I looked and it was a 1909 VDB. Not S, but still!

And, here it is. Pardon the poor photography, because I'm still learning, plus I'm still shaking from excitement! lol

Very nice find, looks to be improperly cleaned, but has AU details.

Nice score. Does anyone in the know think a dip in acetone and putting it on a window sill for a few months would do this coin any good? Or just leave it alone.

It looks like where the cello was partially ripped, it has toned the other part.
I would give it a touch of Verdi Care if it were mine.

Nice pick up..

Great box find!

If you want to even-out the toning, rinse with xylene and put it in a window sill naked for a few months - flip it every week or so.

If it's environmental toning I don't think Verdi-care or acetone will do anything. probably better off leaving it alone. nice find.

Very nice!

The funky toning pattern does not bother me, but if it bothers you then BadThad offers good advice.

Thanks guys! Yeah, I think the uneven toning is because of what SHAFTA9a said. I took pics before I removed it from the cello.

The reverse has less of that effect, plus, I think it's got fantastic toning and detail, especially on the wheat shafts. I really, really like the reverse. I don't think the pics that I took of it raw do it justice.

That toning is fantastic, especially when you look at the pictures of the ripped cello that caused/allowed it.
