So at an estate sale nearby a girl is selling the proof sets she had given to her by her now passed grandfather. She has 1984-2011 years. I need these years: -1984 -1986 -1990 -1994 -1996-2002 -2004 -2008-2011 The only problem is I really only need/want the Kennedy halves out of these for my dansco (and maybe some of the Presidential dollars too). So how much would be a reasonable offer be since it seems she just wants to get rid of them? I was thinking for the different face values pre-1999, the 1999, 2000-2006, 2007-2011 what good prices would be? For the pre-1999 I was thinking maybe $3-4 bucks, 1999 maybe $6, 2000-2006 $8-9, 2007-2011...? I don't want to rip her off by any means but I only need the halves... any ideas? Thanks all!

Add up the total face value of the coins and offer a multiple of that total. Tell her the truth: "I am only interested in the halves so can we can both agree on $$$?" Keep what you need and donate the rest to the CCF Kids program. She'll feel better knowing that her grandfather's coins will be appreciated by both you and the Kids. She'll pocket a little cash and feel good about it.

Well, you should contact Bobby, our forum dad. [bobby131313] When the CCF attends a major coin show he and his troop of helpers distribute these little packets of coins donated by the members. (Not to mention higher value coins as contest prizes.) The value of these packets is small, about a dollar, but the kids appreciate them. There is a card with our Internet address and an invitation for the kids to learn with us. Bobby sent me a bunch of these packets which I distribute at regional coin shows. Without getting kids interested in coins where is our hobby going? As for "ripping off' the seller, I see this as a way to get your halves and honoring her grandfather's memory at the same time. Win-win? I'd say. A little effort is all that is needed and you'll both feel better about the transaction.

The CCF Kids Program refers to the Fun Show in Florida in January. Bobby, (forum Dad) and the group have a dice game the kids can play and win coins. It is one of the best draws at the show for kids. They have done the same at Philadelphia and Chicago.

Ok cool! I will definitely have to think about that with this transaction. I would think for those little packets proof modern coins would be a great thing to have in there! Thanks for the idea! Now I will just have to wait and see what the seller thinks. I didn't have money on me at the time so we are going back on Saturday. She is holding them for me to look at first but she also is going to use this time to research what they would be worth too. So who knows what she will actually want for them after she looks up sold prices on ebay.

I would offer 2 or 3 times face for the sets I wanted.
For the 2008 through 2011 sets I would not mind spending a little more.

Do not make an offer as it can backfire on you since she may think you are taking advantage of her and she won't sell the coins. Do not tell you only want certain coins out of the sets. Ask her what she wants for them all that way she feels that she feels is in control. If it is reasonable just pay it. If it is too much then you can begin to negotiate a price which is satisfactory to the both of you. Whatever you do not want you can always use as trading material or whatever.

Thanks for the advice all! GR, I was thinking 2.5 face for an offer so thought your post was kind of funny. @Gyrene, unfortunately I already told her about the halves and also she didn't even know what she wanted for them they weren't out with all the other estate sale items. I asked if she had any and she looked a little surprised and said yeah she had to run inside to get them. So she has until Saturday when we go back to look up how much she would want to sell them for.

Or you could do something for the coin collecting world and suggest she starts a coin collection and save them all. Who knows maybe being nice may end up being worth something. Might even get you those cheaper.

I might make sure she really wants to sell something her grandfather gave her. They might not mean much to her now, but in the future....
....I have a few things from my grandfather, and they are loaded with sentimental value now.

Sentimental value has no dollar value attached.

True looking at finances I don't think I will be able to buy that many of them, so who knows she may just want to keep them. I will give her that choice and won't be pushy at all about it. As for getting just halves on ebay, I would have to pay almost the amount of the entire set IMO so I would think especially for the earlier ones to just get the set and sell the others for $.50-$1 each. But we will see and I will let you know how it all goes down tomorrow! Thanks for the advice!

Update: wasn't able to get them yesterday due to weather but went today to see what she wanted for the sets. She told me she wanted $100 for all the 1984-2011 sets! She said she looked them up and that is what she wanted because she wanted them to go to someone who would appreciate them. Not a bad day whatsoever! :D
