Not sure if this is a "classic" but I thought I'd start in this forum. I have two $5 gold coins which, I thought were described as Liberty Bust, but maybe it's Half Eagle. I don't yet have a snapshot of my own, but this is the image from an ebay example: http://www.ebay.com/itm/like/121656...id=82&chn=psI'm hoping to sell one of them, even though I admit I'm having a hard time trying to find an interested buyer in New York City (which surprises me). One is 1899, and the other is 1880 but that one also has a small "cc" under the eagle. The wear is probably about the same (I'm new at this, but maybe VF?). Does the "cc" indicate anything meaningful in terms of value/price? (And if you're going to float some numbers, could you let me know if those are retail prices, or what a dealer would offer me?) Thanks for any insight.

Well, CC is Carson City, usually coins from there are more valuable. If you can get pictures of these coins that will help you and us.

Please post pictures. Bring them to local coin shops in NYC, if they aren't interested then the harsh reality is they may be fake. A good reputable coin shop is American Coin and Stamp Brokerage in Merrick, NY. I have dealt with them online and they are great and they shouldn't be too far away from you. But first thing is first post some pictures! We have plenty of experts and if they can't help you I will be shocked.

Thanks, guys.
There is no question in my mind that these are not fake. The problem just seems to be that the dealers here often haven't seemed like real numismatic experts (I know, I know, I'm just a newbie myself, but it's feeling I get), and they're not offering much above bullion. For instance, it seems to me that I shouldn't have to explain to them that my Austrian coin isn't a re-strike.
I don't have a camera (and I haven't had any luck with a little ad trying to get some college kid with a camera to help me out), but I'm experimenting with scanning on a photocopier, and I hope to have that in a day or two.
Hey, I just looked up the place in Merrick - but are they dealers or an auction house?

Your Austrian coin?... Are you talking about a maria theresa thaler? If so it probably is a restrike. The struck those coins for a couple hundred years with MANY restrike variations. Kinda different than modern restrikes But a restrikes none the less. Unless that isn't the austrian coin your talking about?

Ha. No, SSKid, no camera on my computer. I'm VERY low-tech. Interesting idea, though. Would people just hold a coin up to the camera? No, Cascade, it's apparently not a re-strike. This is the thread, if you're curious: https://goccf.com/t/230858#1925986

Carroll the coin place in Merrick are coin dealers but they also do auctions I believe. I have never been there personally as I am in the Hudson valley New York about 2 hours away. I do plan on going there next time I'm in Long Island. Give them a call and see if you can have someone look at your stuff.

FYI - based on today's metal prices, those two coins have about $283 in gold alone, and their numismatic price should go up based on their quality

To clarify your earlier question, this denomination is called the Half Eagle, but the design is called the Liberty Head. If you really have an authentic 1880-CC Half Eagle, it's worth well above bullion. The dealers sound like they want to cheat you out of these coins.

You should really try to get a camera or camera phone and take photos of such coins. If not just for selling but as proof if lost or stolen. And too you could post those photos here and get better estimates of what you have. For example if your coins are in a Mint sort of state, could be worth a lot. If all worn, scratched, dented, etc. worth a lot less.

You don't have a relative with a phone capable of taking pictures?

Or a friend? All we need is a relatively clear picture of each side of the coins, it doesn't have to be a work of art.

Not so sound rude but how can you not find a camera to borrow even for just 30 seconds?

Not to sound rude, but as far as I'm concerned, until the pictures are posted then the coins pretty much don't exist.
