I suspect this is just abnormal wear, but thought I would check. Most of the phrase Twenty Cents is completely obliterated.

I can't see it as "normal" wear, at one particular area at the rim when the rest of the circumference isn't nearly as worn. The transition between "wear" and "not wear" is too abrupt. Grease is a strong possibility.

Thanks. I won't be too disappointed if it's not, it's a common error anyway.
I started looking for errors in my collection after finding a 200X-D Roosevelt dime with a struck-through grease error: https://goccf.com/t/229986#1919555

Grease is a possibility. Unfortunately enlarging the picture does not help. Makes the area look badly photoshopped (deliberately blurred, not saying it has been just that it looks that way.). One thing I was wondering was about the possibility that the coin was altered contemporaneously. The size and design was close enough to that of a quarter that supposedly some people would alter the reverse and pass them as quarters.

I never thought about that. I can assure you the image was not photoshopped, but it may have been smoothed in the past. There is no evidence of tool marks, but the coin looks like it was gold plated while still circulating, as much of the plating is worn away. Maybe someone tried to pass this as a half eagle, like the No Cents V nickels.
