I am sending this one off for grading, please give your opinions and we will see who is right! Images are from my scanner, not sure if this is the best way to capture images of coins, but don't have a decent camera Edited by Peldini 05/28/2015 3:03 pm

Hard to tell from these scans. Looks MS but might be details grade as it appears to have been cleaned and toned.

Appears MS, can't say as to the originality of the surfaces.

I am still learning, so I really appreciate the feedback. I purchased the coin on ebay and I have 14 days to return if not completely satisfied. I will be taking it to my local coin shop and ask their opinion on the surfaces. It appears toned, but not entirely consistent toning, so I am concerned it may be artificial. As far as cleaning, it doesn't appear that way in hand, but I am no pro. Under 10x and 20x magnification, there are no hairlines visible. I will try to provide a better pic.

I'm going to say AU53, but I'm still relatively new. The wear looks light on the eagle's left wing tip and there doesn't appear to be any luster left.

AU-58 or MS-63; it is hard to tell which one.

Looks like it would likely come back details due to a cleaning IMO. Whether or not the re-toning is artificial or natural I can't tell. Artificial toning is usually done on these after a cleaning to cover up the fact that it was cleaned. They are usually cleaned to remove an unsightly irregularity from the look of the coin. The areas of this seemingly irregular re-toning are likely the areas where these undesired qualities used to exist (and still do to an extent). All of that being said, I find the coin attractive and wouldn't regret owning it if it were acquired for what I deemed a fair price. Also, just my Two Cents, if I panned on owning it till I kicked the bucked, I wouldn't bother sending it to a TPG. Then again, I'm only a TPG fan under very specific circumstances. I do understand why you want to send it in though. Best of luck to you if you do!

I took these pictures with my phone, I hope they give you a better look. I will still see my local shop for insight. The strike is really sharp in hand, but I would prefer if the surfaces were original.

In my opinion I don't think the surfaces are original. AU-Details. The blue spot on the reverse is a dead giveaway of improper cleaning/handling.

That's a shame. This is a really nice coin

I went to my local coin shop and spoke with the owner. After looking at the coin he said the toning is unusual but not necessarily artificial. At the shop they also used a 'spectral analyzer' to determine the coin is original. would that machine aid in determining if it had been cleaned? Again, I am still new to this and could use all the help you can provide

Have you sent this coin off for grading yet, Peldini? Curious to see if the TPG's see anything wrong with the coloring. I have a quarter with similar toning and it came back AU55.

Confusing - the phone shots look much worse than the first pics. I don't know if I would spend the TPG fee on this one - if it comes back with a qualifcation, then what will you do? You've spent the dough, but you'll probably have to crack it out to sell it.

I wasn't confident based on the replies in this forum and decided that it was best to return the coin and look for another. It could have been the best or worst decision I have made, but I didn't want the disappointment if it came back Artificially Toned. I got my money back, so the search continues.
Thanks for the advice folks, I am sure I will need it again in the future!
