This one was cherried by Richard Bateson in the 1990s.
I shot this in about 1998. It shows strong doubling on date and IN GOD WE TRUST; light on LIB of LIBERTY, vest, profile and hair. Listed by CONECA as 1-O-V-K8 and CPG as FS-101.

It really is a nice coin isn't it? I always wanted to buy it and then he just sold it off. I was bummed. I think he got $1200 but that was way back when.

I found one of these in the 1917 spot in an old Whitman album, in low grade. I sold it for $150 a year or two ago.

Koinpro..why the black and white images? Shows the coin details better as opposed to a color photo? Just trying to learn from the guys who post really decent pictures and know what they are doing.

jdiablo30,
Back in those days there were no scanners and no Photoshop. Most images that got published were in Black & White and without the software we have today, some colors got washed out and could not be reproduced effectively in the B&W media. Thus you shot everything in B&W. That was the standard back then. Once scanners and software that could effectively convert color to B&W came along, most of us started using color. I think I was one of the first of the numismatic writers to switch to color at the urging of Dave Harper at Numismatic News who suggested there may be a time they'd want to use it. Now NN does 95% of my articles in color. However, in some ways, many B&W images were sharper.

Coop, I like the fact that it is a nice sharp EDS (or as close to it as you can get).

Here is one I handled years ago in VLDS. No comparison!

I've always enjoyed the EDS examples more than the later die states of varieties. Sometimes on class 2 doubled dies, they disappear on the outside edge of outer devices.

Whatsamatter Coop? You don't like the late die state images? To be honest, I think the B&W looked better. I tried colorizing them and used them as such in Numismatic News but I somehow came back around to the B&W.

I've always preferred monochromatic images for detail images anyway. Makes evaluation of the actual features easier. Of course, nowadays we've got guys like rmpsrpms who is doing them in full color and 3D to boot.

SsDs,
Even when I take color and convert it to B&W for my ads in the print media, I'm always amazed at how much more you can see.
