Try rubbing on the rim. You can see the silver color come through quicker on the raised devices. Also the color would be as dark as a cent if this were a missing cladding. On the coin found outside, this silver color comes through quicker. Not so on the missing cladding examples.
I found these outside in the grass near my vehicle. I find them every year after a thaw. Same effect though many coins may be a bit different than here depending on the retirement were found. No I didn't find the War Nickel on the ground. I got it from a fellow at the grocery store that was going to spend it.
