I've had this coin for a month now. Impulse buy on ebay. I took advantage of the 'buy now, pay later' offer and saved $15 of the $165 purchase price. With shipping, I paid $156 for it.

I bought it knowing it had been cleaned, and knowing it was raw. The cleaning didn't look all that bad in the sellers photos. I'm surprised that the gouge on the reverse didn't give it a 'damage' grade.

I treated the spot of corrosion on the reverse with some Verdi Chem. (thanks again BadThad) For the past month, I've been carrying it around in my pocket in hopes of giving it some honest wear.

That's a really nice coin. Please reconsider carrying it around in your pocket, only bad things can happen. If you are looking to have it tone to what's considered market acceptable, put it on the window sill. There are threads on this. Please don't keep it in your pocket, my heart almost skipped a beat when I read that. get a $5 pocket piece instead.

VF25 details

Do not carry it. It doesn't need it.

Oh the horror!
This is a great large cent it deserves to go back in the coin album.
This coin has excellent detail. I grade the sharpness at EAC 20 which would correspond to a VF-25 market grade. The date is weak but that's understandable considering the terminal die crack on the reverse. The slight gouge while distracting doesn't bother me a bit.
It has been cleaned but is retoning fine. Put it on a sunny window sill for a few weeks. I'll have to net grade it down to EAC 10 for the odd color.
Take it out of your pocket, please.

Looks like carrying it in your pocket has already helped the coins appearance. I would continue this for awhile. I've personally done this often with details coins... Nice LC!

If that coin was cleaned, it was very lightly. It is a nice large cent, and the window sill is the place to restore a more natural look.

Germanicvs...If you look closely you can see the hairlines. These will disappear a lot better by carrying in his pocket vs. setting on a window sill.

I'm a bit confused on this? Just for clarification, when someone says, "carry it in my pocket," are we talking about with other change, keys, old candy wrappers, etc? ...or are we talking about in an empty pocket where just the pocket fabric can contact the coin?

Carry a collectors coin in one's pocket carries the risk that the coin may be damaged irreparably.

1893S, looking more closely I do see now the hairlines on the obverse.

I tend to associate cleaning on copper with areas of abnormal or light red colour, that is why I thought the cleaning was very light on this coin as the colour seems quite even throughout.

I think it's already got honest wear! I know there's differing opinions on this topic, but I would not carry it around. At all.

Here's a link to the original ebay listing....

http://www.ebay.com/itm/23153581822...RK:MEBIDX:IT

My original offer was $150. That's how much I had in my paypal account. The seller countered with $165. I took advantage of the 'buy now, pay later' offer that ebay has been bombarding me with for months.

I clicked the 'accept offer' tab.

The seller charged me $6 for it to be shipped to my mailbox. One week later, the coin was in my hands.

It's been in my left front pocket along with my money-clip. It has spent some time inside a small zip-lock baggie with some other copper and silver coins. My pocket change is in my right front pocket. In my day-to-day business, I'm on my feet a lot, and do a lot of walking. Keeping in on the left side insures that I won't accidentally spend it.

Old candy wrappers? I normally throw those into the floorboard of the passenger seat.

I will admit that I did lose this coin for 3 days due to carrying it. It fell out of my pocket when I reached for my money-clip while in the drive-thru @ Taco Bell. I retraced my steps and found it. I kicked myself repeatedly for those 3 days.

I can still see the hairlines as well 1893S. They'll always be there unless the coin becomes more worn. Window-sill toning won't make them go away. I realize that I am reducing the 'grade' of this coin by having it in my pocket. I've taken the steps necessary to remove the corrosion on the reverse.

A few more months of it rattling around in my pocket, along with rubbing my fingers over in once in awhile, will give it some honest wear.

Let's all keep in mind that all of my photos are taken with a Sony Cybershot 6.0 pocket cam in 'macro' mode. Using a fluorescent desk lamp with an adjustable neck.

I'm bumping this thread to show some new photos of this coin. I carried it around in my pocket for almost 3 more months, and decided to show it to my local coin shop.

I'm notorious for constantly deleting my photos from photobucket. I've uploaded them again, and I'll put them all here.

Here's the sellers photos first.

Second are the photos after receiving it and treating the tiny spot of corrosion.

Third set of photos are of it after it had been in my pocket for a month.

A few weeks ago, the guys at my local coin shop talked me into sending it to PCGS. They felt it had a shot at coming back in a problem-free slab. And it did.

With the grading fees, I'm still only into this one for $200. I doubt I'll crack this one back out to fill the hole in my 7070.
