At the beginning of this year I figured I'd give completing a Jefferson nickel collection through CRH a shot. I knew getting the 50-D wasn't realistic but have heard the others aren't too bad. So far I've went through about $300 and am missing 21 of the 61 pre 1960's! I think I have everything 60-2014 except the 2009-P. I guess $300 isn't very much in the grand scheme of things but I don't have a way to get rid of all the coins aside from Coinstar! Guess I'll keep at it a little at a time. This might take a few years to complete! Edited by LibertyEagle20 05/30/2015 9:39 pm

Sa, It is not easy. Pushing $10,000 searched down to 4 38D&S 39D&S. May I suggest using rolls to pay for gas, stores etc. many place have no problem accepting rolls for payment, because they use so many on a daily basis. Some places I have spent rolls actually thank me because they were running short on change.

But is is the most possible from current circulated USA coinage at face value. Best of luck on the quest.

You have a good start, keep searching, it can be done. Ask for customer wrapped rolls.

It took me over 3 years / 2 boxes per week to find the 2nd from last one for my set the 1938S. I already had a 1950D UNC from when I was a kid. I have since found 4 1938S, the set stopper, from Jan1 to date So that is over 315 boxes / 625,000 nickels searched to come one shy (1950D) of a complete set from circulation. I still search nickels to finish my second set (also just need a 1950D and all are similar grade as my 1st tier set) Now throw some errors into the equation and you have another 100-500 boxes to go through. I have found 2 1939 DDR, a 1943P double eye, a 1943/2 P, and a 1945 DDR. Still looking for the over mintmarks. The thrill is in the hunt. https://goccf.com/t/194022&SearchTe...ed,jefferson

For me, the key is not the 1950-D, its the 1939-D, in searching nearly two million Jefferson nickels, I have found six 1950-D's but only four 1939-D's. -Jos Curwen, Gent.

Fully concur that it is not easy ... but it is possible.
I completed the entire series 1938 -2014 through bank rolls. It took me 320,800 nickels search to complete the task.
There are numerous threads here on the CCF where I've shared statistical updates on the liklehood of finding pre-1960 nickels for modern roll searchers.
Take cheer that it can be done ... with a lot of patience.
Keep us posted on your status and best of wishes.

Thanks for the words of encouragement everyone! Eventually I may have to cheat and pick up some of the rarer coins on ebay when I find a good price. I think I misunderstood it being possible to get them through circulation as "easy." Regardless going through nickels has been a good change of pace for me. I initially only searched pennies but decided to branch out to nickels. I've found a couple of buffalo's as well but no V nickels yet. Jack - nice pics of your nickel collection in the post you referenced! How do you keep the coins from getting smudged up in a book like that? I love the look of it but unless there is a clear film or something over the coins I would be afraid of them getting smudged as you turn the pages. Right now I'm putting mine in 2x2's, labeling them, and putting them in 3 ring binder pages (20 2x2's per page). It isn't near as cool looking as your set but it gets the job done.

I would say in 2 years I have done about $1000 in nickels and am missing 30 including 2015 issues (havent bothers sorting change this year really) i spend the things on Sunday newspaper since that is what it costs. also places with self-serve checkouts that have coin acceptors are great. get a drink or something and just dump some coins into it. they cant handle too many at a time, but every little bit helps to spend them without having to pay a fee to coinstar. unless you get the gift card things that dont charge a fee at coinstar. it can probably be done, slowly but surely. what is getting harder is Buffs from CRH.

Do not give up yet. You may have to break down and buy the key dates, but everything else is within reach.

sa - check out my footer. To get to 90% it took me 9 boxes (my 2015 challenge).
1st set: missing 1939D but no idea how many nickels I flipped to get there 2nd set: missing 6 (38DS, 39DS, 50D, maybe the 49S or 51S?)but no idea how many nickels to get to this point 3rd set: missing 17 after 27,500 nickels flipped but I'm keeping an eye on things and count here because I'm curious
Not easy, but doable. It's a terrific challenge so I suggest you hang in there and keep at it. Filling holes here will offset the lean times with the other denominations. I can't recall the last time I filled a hole in my second Lincoln set. Months...perhaps close to a year if I exclude upgrades. And it's not a race...no prize for finishing quickly.

Completing a Jefferson set from circulation is not easy, but it is fun. We have done around 400 boxes I would guess. There are some very hard to get nickels in that series. Keep going. It will take longer than you thought. Don't wimp out and buy them. As said before, the fun is in the hunt.

Joseph, In our 400 boxes, our hardest to find include the following, which are the only ones we have not hit double digits on: 1950d (1) 1939d (6) 1938s (3) 1938d (5) 1939s (7) 1942S (8) 1943D (3) 1944D (7) 1944S (8) None of the other Jefferson nickels have been hard for us to find.

I've been thinking about starting a nickel set from roll searching but the thing I'm most hesitant about is creating a relationship with a bank where they'll ship in $40,000 in nickels for me over a period of time and then building another relationship with a different bank where they'll be willing to accept that much coin over time. I imagine it's a huge pain for them.

$40,000 in how long of a time span? I took me about 8 months to look through 10,000 and since slowed down considerably. Partly being because I jumped on the half dollar bandwagon.
With that being said I only need the 1950 - D to complete the collection.
