If you are going to be a coin dealer, where do you find the coins you are going to sell?

I sell on the side post ads online see if people are willing to sell etc. I literally got two collections to sell for family friends today I get 15% and 20% commission respectively so that's how I found my collection....I expect to make several hundred bucks when I sell it all next week

I would not use websites, but rather newspapers. Try ebay. I usually either buy coins and flip them or find them in circulation.

You have to be on the prawl all the time..make connections ,go to shows,I recently made friends with a jewler that gives me a ring anytime anyone brings in gold/silver coins. The thing is if your trying to make fast quick $$. You know what they say. You need money to make money. In this case your best bet would to be buying in bulk but that gets expensive instantly.

centsdimes: Do you have ANY sort of a numismatic background, or at least a love of coins? If you're just trying to find a way to make money quick...you should probably come up with a better idea. So many of your comments on these pages make it seem like you don't know a whole lot about coins, other than SOME PEOPLE can make money off of them. If you don't know what you're doing, you'll waste your time and probably lose money in the process.

I sell on ecrater, ebay, and occasionally shows. Most of the coins I sell, I flip for profit. To answer your question, experience and knowledge are key when buying/selling coins. If you don't have both, avoid until you have more experience.

Yeah...sorry if I sounded harsh. Not trying to squelch your dreams...just asking if you have some background and are properly prepared.

The best thing to do is get a flea market shop and you will find people will walk in and accept 20% value. But the rent will kill you. Those are my observations I personally don't own a shop just sell on ebay . I think I would rather get a table for 25 bucks a day.

I am 95% collector but from talking to many dealers at shows etc. it seems most get their stock from other dealers at shows and from word-of-mouth referrals. People who know they deal coins will tell aquaintances looking to sell their deceased dad's, mom's. grandparents, etc. collection to look them up and that is where a lot of them get the best bargains and stock from. Some also have suppliers they buy from or just sell for. I was dealing on a coin listed at one site and another dealer I was talking to said he could sell me the same coin - it was from a mutual supplier - for less. And he did. I also will notice that some dealers have a lot of coins in a series that "look similar". My educated guess is they all came from one collector's collection and thus were similarly preserved or collected. Like this "tnfc" guy on ebay has LOTS of $10 gold Indian coins with black streaks on them. Another dealer told me that is because his supplier is a European who stored the coins in leather sacks that gave them black streaks over time.
