This is for all the experienced submitters here.

I recently bought a handful of raw Libertads in an online auction, with the intention of putting them into my Dansco set. Well when I received them, they were way nicer than I had anticipated and have decided to add them to my newly started registry set.

Now I have sent a couple of coins out to get graded, but never a bulk submission. So here are my questions for the more experienced.

When you submit several coins of the same type,is the entire submission kept together. Does one grader generally grade the whole submission or is the submission accepted, cataloged and divided among available graders. In other words, graders are supposed to look at each coin objectively and as an entirely separate submission, but when looking at several of the same type (different years) of coin, I can't help but think it is unavoidable that you not only grade the coins to a standard, but also can't help subconsciously compare the present coin to the previous coins you have graded and this skews the grade. So...is it better to submit each coin at a separate time (not worrying about the cost of shipping one as opposed to bulk shipping) in order to get a more objective (hopefully higher) grade?

Also how does everyone generally send in their submissions, in 2X2's, Air-tites, Mylar flips, wrapped in newspaper ....... ?

The TPGs have very specific guidelines on how to package your coins for shipment. I think the recommendation is to use 2.5x2.5 flips. Vinyl is probably best since it's softer and less likely to impact the coin, even though it's less suitable for long-term storage.

Each submission would be put in its own box, or group of boxes if the submission is large. If you submission fits into one box then yes oe grader will look at the whole submission at once. But supposedly the box will be looked at by two other graders as well. If it is in multiple boxes I don't know if the same grader would see each box one after another, but it would not surprise me if they do. Just from a security measure I can't see them splitting up a multi-box submission a dispersing it among several people. Too easy for something to get lost that way. Even if just temporarily lost.

I would also think grading would be more consistent if graded all at the same time rather than having to "reconsider" the grading standard for that series each time an idividual piece came through.

Although not very experienced, I had the same questions about submitting an order to get the most objective/best grades. I have the same feeling as you, that if they see a lot of the same coin they might not grade them as objectively as only seeing one coin. Unfortunately the cost of separate submissions might be prohibitive unless the value of a coin in a one point higher grade would make it worth your while to give it a shot.

I think the instructions say to send then in 2x2 mylar flips.

Here are the packing & shipping guidelines from PCGS;

SHIPPING INSTRUCTIONS:

House your coins individually in 2 ½" x 2 ½" mylar flips (we do not accept acrylic snap cases or cardboard and stapled coin holders). Place the coin in the inside front pouch of the flip so the openings of the flip are not exposed.
Note: PCGS highly recommends you use mylar flips when submitting any of your coins for grading. The inert mylar flips will be a better storage unit for your coins while they are in the grading process here at PCGS.
For Grading (raw coins), label each mylar flip using a sticker. Write the submission number and the corresponding line number for that item on the sticker and place it on the flip.
When utilizing the carbon, four page form, tear away the gold copy (last copy) and retain for your records. Send the remaining three copies with your coins to PCGS.
Package securely and mark the outside of the package with the fastest service level you are sending. For complimentary submissions, please mark "CLUB." This will help expedite the processing of your order.
You may send us more than one submission at a time in the same box. If you do this, be sure and fill out the "Package Information" block at the top of the submission form.
Please be sure that each individual order has its own submission form and method of payment. We are unable to combine orders for return shipment unless you are utilizing your own USPS or FedEx account.
Note: When mailing packages to PCGS, please be sure to tape the entire package. By taping the package well, you'll reduce the chances of tampering during shipping and prevent items from slipping through the openings in the box.
Ship via USPS Registered Mail (registered, insured) for safest delivery. Ship to: PCGS, P.O. Box 9458, Newport Beach, CA 92658
If shipping via FedEx (excluding Ground), ship to: PCGS (Hold for pick up), 7000 Barranca Parkway, Irvine, CA 92618
Keep a copy of the shipment tracking number for your records.
No UPS or DHL shipments will be accepted.
Visit http://www.pcgs.com/membership/ to check the status of your order.
We do not accept postage stamps for return shipping. In addition, we do not accept boxes or containers for the return of your order.

I agree with you that graders when grading a group of coins may subconsciously compare the present coin to the previous coins they have graded and this may skews the grade, but It may work both ways as could take some coins down and some coins up. I have submitted a MS 65 with a group of MS 62 and MS 63s, and I got the MS65, but I still like to submit a group of similar graded coins and not stick in a higher one off.

Thanks for the responses. I have read the submission guidelines previously, but was wondering if anyone had submitted in capsules or 2X2s and were accepted. The coins I want to submit are in 2X2's. Every time I put a coin in a flip or remove one, I always cringe as the coin scrapes the side of the flip. I am really not looking forward to removing these pristine coins from their 2X2's and "sliding" them into flips.

I did send in some Morgan's in a 2X2 to NGC and the coins were accepted, but they did send me a reminder on how to submit coins with the 2.5X2.5.

To my experience of being on the floor of several TPG's over the years, each major TPG has a minimum of three graders grade each coin, these are done separately, after which a consensus is drawn, if the 3 grades are all different, that is when a senior grader or "finalizer" steps in and makes the final call.

I've never seen a graded coin only examined by a single grader, at least not with the major TPG's, now I'm sure that is how it's done with the basement slabbing companies.
