An issue not normally found in the cull bin as this one was. Strike is pretty dreadful overall. I recall reading or hearing somewhere that at some point during Peace dollar production, the word "GOD" was enhanced by one or more mint employees. Could this possibly be one of those? Colligo ergo sum

It looks like it. GOD is definitely bolder than the IN and WE on either side of it. Whether there is a premium for it I do not know. Check VAMWORLD.com they might have it listed.

It is exceptionally better than the other devices. I have no idea.

If nothing else, it does seem to be the "High S" variety that Van Allen & Mallis identified many years ago.

Quote: What does the reeding look like? Unremarkable. It's certainly not a cast counterfeit if that's why you're asking.

Definitely a strengthened motto. I have it as one of the "Medium High S" VAM-3's, although it's not possible to determine the exact mint mark location because of the angled pics. Gotta disagree with you about strike quality - I think this one was pretty much hammered. Look at the strength of LIBERTY at the periphery - the tops of those letters fade quickly with a weaker strike and yours are fully-formed. PEACE on the reverse (the equivalent weak-strike spot) practically jumps off the surface. This one was struck. There seems enough data at VAMworld to come up with an attribution. Are straight-on shots, for mint mark location, possible?

I like this story ... Thanks for posting.
Also ... I just purchased a 26S this morning ... Was still in my pocket So I had to check. Mine also looks like "GOD" is much bolder ....
Were they all this way?
Just checked cherry pickets guide, it has no mention of It being a variety.
Now will have to check my other 26S's when I get home.

I got a 1926 in AU 58 condition. It is slabbed but I would just as soon have it unslabbed and in my book. It is not rare, but I like all those Peace dollars. I like large silver coins.

Thank you, fenton & rynegold, for the links. So it's nothing special for the date, but at least on this example it's pretty obvious. Quote: Are straight-on shots, for mint mark location, possible? QED
