Search hobo nickel and you'll find some useful information. Modern perhaps. Was it in change or did you purchase it? Nice pick up.

That is called a "Hobo Nickel". Where did you get it? Not in pocket change did you?

It is real, it's a Hobo Nickel, a Buffalo nickel at one time and was carved on the Obverse to make a different portrait. Jeff

Pretty amazing that you got that in change.
Very nice find!

A coin like that should be worth $10.00 - $15.00, maybe more if someone really liked it.

Welcome Smaimone!
The first thing that I noticed was the well-preserved condition of the reverse.
This suggests that it was carved years ago and resided in a collection before
making its way back into circulation. Cannot be proved however.
I hope that you will give it a good home.
It is a bit of history, both of numismatics and of the Great Depression when the original 'hoboes' took a nickel, carved a design, and tried to sell it for a dime.

Thanks all, for all the responses. I check all change from store. Been collecting this was for 40 or so years. This find did confuse me. I'm glad I joined this forum. I do collect as I find, but a collector I am not, so I don't know much. Thanks again all.

Nice find.

I suggest you keep it with some notation as to what it is lest the next generation dumps it back into circulation. Besides, it will be fun to have the date you got it in change noted -- not that you're likely to forget getting this in change!
