Today I had an idea to try and acquire one piece of every denomination from a particular year- I was thinking 1857, as this year is also relatively significant to numismatics, with the transition to small cents, and would contain both types of cents. The coins of this year, from Philadelphia at least, are relatively common, all the way from the Half Cent to the Double Eagle.
Has anyone else tried something like this?

There are a lot of collectors that do this sort of set for a variety of reasons. It is a popular thing to do. I had thought many times about doing one for either 1900 or 1901 but other things got in the way as far as priority in getting completed. Good luck and happy hunting if you decide to go for it.

I was checking out the PCGS registry sets and a lot of people have the year set that's it. No MM or anything. Very practical way of completing a year to date set.

Birth year & 100yrs birthyear sets are popular for obvious reasons. I think one of the mods (maybe fuzzy) is trying to get birth year coins from every country on his want list

I completed a birth year set (1941) for US coins.
And am toying with a worldwide set (minus some).
The Vatican struck some gold coins and there are varieties from other countries that cost more than I'm willing to pay.

With my birth year being 2000, that wouldn't make for a very interesting set. I suppose the -100 years idea could work, I could try 1900, but I would still rather do a date that has some numismatic significance. Plus, I already have a FEC, Half Dime and Quarter Dollar from that year.

Also, kanga- your birth year is currently your post count!

I think it sounds like a great idea and 1857 would be a fantastic year if you can do it.

Assembling a date set is a very common and easy way to collect. I am currently doing one 100 years before I was born and I have really enjoyed it. If you do decide to put a set together, make sure you update us with lots of pics.

For 1857, the Double Eagle is the only coin that is really out of my budget, but I still have enough cash to buy one if I really want to. The MM set would be very tough, as the Eagle and Double Eagle were struck at three mints, the Gold Dollar and Quarter Eagle at 4, and the Half Eagle at 5, so I would definitely stick to just Philadelphia.
These are my 1857 coins so far, but as they all reside in my 7070, I would probably get new ones, in better condition, especially that poor Half Dime. The Quarter Dollar carries the distinction of being one of my first two silver coins, along with a fourpence dated 1843; which my father found together in a box in our garage in 2006. They couldn't have been there long, though, as the box was plastic and the house was only built in 1982.

For my 'birth year minus a century,' all I have are 7 or 8 1900 IHC's in AG-VG and maybe a V nickel or two.

A SS Central America 1857-S Double Eagle would make a great coin for the date set!
