Looks like a Half Dime. How did your son receive it?

Half Dimes are 5 cents, but " Half Dime" was what nickels were called before they were called "nickels".

That is a nice find! Tell him you want some more.
I think a coin in that condition is worth around $15.00 - $20.00, but better check around to make sure.

The US 5-cent coins were called Half Dimes when they were made out of silver, up until 1873. 5-cent coins were made out of nickel/copper beginning in 1866 (some overlap).

I can't tell from these photos but the same design was used for dimes in 1861. If the coin is the same diameter as a modern Roosevelt dime then you know it is a dime, not a Half Dime. Please check and let us know!

The USA 5-cent coins were originally made of silver, starting in 1794. They were exactly half the weight and half the silver content of the 10-cent dimes. The first nickel-alloy 5-cent coins were issued in 1866 and became popular, with the term "nickel" becoming the common name for the coin. The silver half-dime pieces were phased out with 1873 being the last year of issue.

Some years of Half Dimes and dimes are known for having reverse dies with this type of weakness of the lettering in the center of the reverse. For the entire center with the denomination is not unusual for a coin with this amount of wear.
