I saw this high grade 1818 Large Cent on ebay. To me it looks like the bit of red on the coin is original, hidden in the protected areas. What do you think? (I'm trying to learn to detect original red from cleaned and retoned.) Thanks! http://www.ebay.com/itm/1818-Large-...em2351fbbf16Paul Bulgerin

I'm inclined to believe that it's not original red. I could be wrong, many times it is hard to determine whether a coin has been cleaned or not. It is a nice AU and I would gladly buy this coin.

If it is consider it a bonus, but don't get to jazzed up over the red now.

Obverse looks like it, but the reverse does not. As such, you can draw your own conclusions.

An 1818 Large Cent is a difficult test case for learning because of the Randall Hoard. A large keg (several thousand coins) of Large Cents dated 1816-1820 was found under an old railway platform in Georgia, shortly after the Civil War. Apparently all were Mint State-ish, but many showed environmental afflictions like the coin in the auction (almost certainly a Randall coin). Randall was a Norwish, NY coin collector who ended up with the remainder of the hoard after the initial owner - a Norwich merchant - had passed many of the coins out to customers as a publicity stunt.
It's assumed that the overwhelming majority of 1816-1820 Mint State Large Cents are from this hoard.

I'm doubting that it's original, but it sure is a sharp strike. There appears to be some reverse discoloration, and a former owner may have doctored the surfaces, perhaps?
I'm somewhat surprised that it apparently drew no bids at the $239 price. Now, it's got a BIN price of $399, yet open to offers.

I think it's probably just fine. If you're going to clean and retone a large cent, you don't add carbon spots and you don't pick this date.

Nice detail left for sure, but I am joining those who do not believe that red is original. The red is not evenly distributed, and the overall toning is too uneven with spots. Also surprised it did not find a buyer.

The coin is a Newcomb-10 variety. Love the wagon wheel crack on the obverse. I would jump on it in a heartbeat at that price.
