I picked up one recently for $9.99 and got quite a few Sanfrancisco mint marks including a 1943S Steelie and a few un circulated Wheaties and a sort of beat up 1909(probably a D)non VDS wheatie and a 1900 indian head. I also found some uncirculated coins so I'll post pics of my finds later.
So I figure this was a gamble and I'll probably get my money back figuratively if some of these are over .15 cents each.

They are "unsearched" but really these have all been cherry picked. There is probably a .01 % chance of getting an unsearched roll.

There is also the guy who claims to sell OBW rolls with wheats showing on both ends. One of his feedback's said that the roll had 51 coins in it. He is also the guy that sells bank wrapped rolls with an Indian Head penny or VDB showing on both ends, the roll full of culls. Sometimes he even throws a Silver dime on the end or a Gold coin. Gotta watch buying "Unsearched Rolls" from ebay.

As I said before it was a gamble. But it looks like I have quite a few uncirculated coins in the lot including a 1937 1958 and 1955. But I also have a few full date sets of the P D and S mint marks of several of the years and I believe in total I have over 20 S marked coins out of over 100 wheat cents.

Sounds like you did okay. There may be a few truly unsearched rolls out there, but they are probably few and far between.

Quote: There may be a few truly unsearched rolls out there, but they are probably few and far between. There are no truly unsearched rolls any more. The person selling the roll(s) may not have searched them but you can count on any one of the rolls' previous owners has gone through it/them.

I got into the "unsearched" game in my early collecting days. I bought 2000 white pennies with all 2000 being from the 1940s plus. After that I tried an unsearched roll of buffalo nics. I got completely buffaloed on those. Not a single one of them had a date lol Needless to say I lost interest in it quick.

There's a reason that you can't find the word "unsearched" in the dictionary. Something can't be unsearched. Once it's searched, it's searched.
Marketing nonsense.

You're better off dropping $25 on a box of cents at the bank. Keep what you like (at face value!) and recycle the rest. Even if you get skunked...you're not out any money & gain invaluable experience.

I have bought unsearched lots on ebay - several hundred to a few thousand coins/lot It worked out where I got many semi-key dates and filled a large portion of my pre-40 wheat slots in coin folder. That being said, a lot of the batches were junk or average. I bought a ton of lots, and probably got lucky, so it's likely not worth it for the most part. I pretty much sold what I didn't keep as large and medium lots (not unsearched - ha) I also found a columbian exposition half dollar in one batch.

You were right on your starting post. you took a ''gamble'' and as in all gambling sometimes you win and most times you lose. take heed to what the other members are telling you. If you don't know what your doing ;you can get burnt on e-bay. Trust me I've been there ! aside from that have fun collecting Lincolns.

The closest thing to "unsearched" I have found is wheatie lots purchased from my local B&M store. They are a fairly busy shop and all bulk Wheatie walk-ins not in an album, folder, or 2x2 get run through a coin counter and dumped in five gallon buckets with no further searching. Out of 10,000 or so Wheaties I have purchased in the past few years, I have not found any of the big key dates but I have found numerous semi-key D and S Wheaties from the Teens and early 1920s in addition to a few errors, RPMs, and doubled dies along with a lot of RD/RB Uncs and Steel cents.

This "unsearched" pitch is the oldest gimmick in the book. When I was a kid in the 50s you could get truly random bags (even then keys were almost never found). But every generation since the 70s has fallen for this sham as evidenced by ads even today as you note. Save your time and your money for something with real potential.

I'm glad I read this post. I was thinking about trying ebay for some rolls. Does anyone know where to get OBW's? If not, I think I'll just stick to the boxes.

Quote: and a sort of beat up 1909(probably a D)non VDS wheatie If you actually got a 1909 with a mintmark even without a VDB you got a good one. The only mintmark on cents in 1909 is S no D's.

"unsearched" = "I didn't search through them for die clashes, cracks, chips, grease strikes, repunched mintmarks, and other mint happenings" ?
or
"unsearched" = "I didn't search through and pull out the culls, bents, corroded stuff, and other undesirables" ?
"It depends upon what the meaning of the word 'is' is," danced a recent fearless leader about a potential definition "technicality."
