Last weekend while visiting my mother and miles away from any coin shop, I was able to attend a local auction which contained a surprisingly large collection of Canadian coinage for bid. After inspecting the table I set my sights on a crate which contained 29 rolls of 1953 pennies. Half of them were in original bank rolls and were obviously unopened and the other half were wrapped in tin foil. I eventually bid on many things that night(and won)but this thread will be about the pennies. The story the auctioneer gave about the pennies was that the man, (who had passed away recently), was celebrating his 53rd birthday over 30 years ago and his friends who knew he was an avid collector had bought the pennies to decorate the cake. They would wrap them in foil and make them look like candles on the cake. As far fetched as this story sounds, I still bought them. I paid 2.50$ a roll. Which greatly amused my mom's husband (he spent the rest of the week trying to sell me his pocket change for 5 or 6 times the value). I tried to explain that 1953 pennies had many varieties and that the coins I saw (from a few partially opened foil rolls) were mint and might fetch a premium one day. So the Roll Hunt is On! I have almost 1500 pennies to look through. If I find any varieties I will post them on this thread. I appreciate any tips for handling and for conservation as I haven't had much experience with copper coins so far. Feel free to post your 1953 pennies as well! Thanks

I want a birthday cake like that! I don't know a thing about Canadian coinage except for the dates and purity of silver, but good luck. I hope you find plenty of varieties, and maybe some nice errors.

That's a great deal AgHoarder.. Yes, look for varieties and let us know what you find also, some look quite high mint state, keep those out seperate.

Just wondering if the tin foil would tarnish the copper over the years? Coins look unaffected from the foil. John1

Get yourself some cotton gloves. use them when handling those copper beauties. I know your going to want to open all the rolls and look for varieties but if it were me I would save a few OBW rolls for the future. they could have a nice premium in 30 or so years. don't know about the ones that were wrapped in tin foil, hope their all red with no spotting.

Quote: Just wondering if the tin foil would tarnish the copper over the years? Coins look unaffected from the foil. I haven't opened a bank roll yet but with the tin-foil wrapped coins, I am finding the odd fingerprint. Also, I've noticed most of the toning in the rims. The fields for the most part seem unaffected. I'll be opening a few rolls today and posting results later.

Will be using gloves for sure, thanks for the advice. I'm going to start with the foil wrapped rolls. I'm definitely reluctant to open those bank rolls.

I never noticed this earlier but look at the close up reverse picture I initially posted. If you look at the top of the 3 you will notice the figure of another 3 going straight up to the stem and then curving towards the leaf. I believe this is a hanging three!! 90% of the first roll have this marker!! Here is a close up of another coin which shows this marker. Also notice the doubling of the 5. This is my first coin with doubling. I'm half way into my first roll and I'm in heaven right now!

Coin count so far: 1 roll - 51 coins NSF - 8 SF - 0 NSF hanging "3" - 31 NSF double hanging "3" - 8 NSF double "53", double hanging "3" - 2 NSF double "5", double hanging "3" - 2
I know it's just one roll but I am amazed so far at the amount of varieties I am finding. Perhaps this first roll was an anomaly but my gut tells me that some of these varieties are more common than I thought. Would love it if somebody was able to post population reports. Thanks.

Nice score on the rolls - you'll have a ton of fun, perhaps I need to start attending auctions!
