I've been watching this seller for a bit. They sell all sorts of coins, some slabbed, some raw. A lot of the auctions are authentic coins. But every cycle there always seems to be at least one valuable fake mixed in. The latest fake, date is too large: http://www.ebay.com/itm/1871-Indian...em3aabac61dfI sent them a message a few weeks ago before these three ended: http://www.ebay.com/itm/1869-Indian...047675.l2557Definite fake 1869 (date way too large) lurking in album lot: http://www.ebay.com/itm/41-Indian-H...047675.l2557Look how flat the shield is on the S mint IHC (Fake!): http://www.ebay.com/itm/Estate-Roll...047675.l2557I told them that some of their coins are counterfeit and that they should remove them. Didn't get a response. Another likely fake, very dark and date looks a bit strange: http://www.ebay.com/itm/1909-S-Indi...047675.l2557Again, there are a small number of fakes being sold here, but they are high value items. I think they are sprinkled in to avoid detection. I can't prove that the seller is intentionally doing this, but it keeps happening, check even farther back in the history and you will see many more fakes. I can see a seller acquiring a couple fakes by random chance, but there are way too many in this case. Avoid this seller..

I can't do anything about it. ebay does the same thing for me that they do for you - nothing, not even enforcing their own rules. Bobby can, though.

O.o so this prompts the question from me... what exactly is Bobby that grants him these magical powers of influence over ebay? I know he is forum "dad" but is there a thread on more about this legendary figure?

It's pretty simple. Bobby is in communication with people at ebay who can make this stuff go away. Even though ebay has, as a corporation, completely abdicated its' responsibility under its' own rules - much less the additional legal burden forced upon them by the Hobby Protection Act, under which they're engaging in literal criminal activity - there are still people associated with ebay who want to do what's right. Bobby has their ear and trust, and they'll make stuff go away as he brings it to their attention. Since it doesn't cost them money to have him around, it's an effective recourse for them and something they can hold up as a defense if anyone ever succeeds in getting pressure onto ebay (Heaven knows I've tried and failed) to start combating their status as the world's largest enabler of counterfeit article distribution to the US.

I just reported the fake S-VDB. Note that the seller is offering some PCGS coins; this, perhaps to garner an air of credibility?

I wonder if we could do a class action lawsuit against ebay?

SD just confirmed everything I assumed about the relationship Bobby has with ebay down to the last detail. I did't know if I would be out of line asking and I was pretty sure that's how it was anyway. I even debated with myself if what he was doing was right as ebay would use him as a defense on an HPA lawsuit. My conclusion was... get 'em bobby!

Until ebay takes a few financial hits (fines) to the bottom line (from Hobby Protection Act, RICO violations, Etc) they will allow Sellers like this to continue selling counterfeit goods. There is far too much of it going on for CCF members to catch and report. Anyway, by the time ebay sees the reports from us regular "unconnected smucks" the item is long gone...especially with the one day and three day auction formats. Until ebay starts getting serious with account suspensions for repeat violators it's pretty much "business as usual" for these types of Sellers. I know we all appreciate Bobby's efforts and are glad that he has somebody's ear at ebay. At least he can get something done. It's just sad that the reports we make apparently go to cyber oblivion and aren't taken seriously. If you run a business you should not expect your customers to have to police it for you. If your customers do tell you something is wrong you fix it.

When you are really very big there is nothing wrong with expecting your customers to help you police things. Quote: If your customers do tell you something is wrong you fix it. That's the problem. When you customers are helping to police things you do need to listen to them. That doesn't mean you blindly accept what they say, but it does mean you should investigate their reports. (like set up a committee to examine these reports and remove the offending auctions. Oh wait they had that and they disbanded it.)

They ARE responding to regular reports now. Just not at the length they were before, but we're working on it.
Just so you know, the coin and stamp category execs were completely blindsided with the disbanding of the CCW. Completely. We are now working to get something back in place and there is progress. I speak with them almost every day.
I took care of the one in this topic that was still active when I saw it.

That's what ebay has become. The people who care are having to fight their own employer to keep their customers from being fleeced.
