I would like to begin attribution of my large cent collection. I am getting close to completing my 1800-1857 date set and would like to begin the fun of attributing them. So, my question, which books and editions are best for this? Is there more than on edition to "Penny Whimsey" etc. I have reasonable experience with attribution of Capped bust halves, quarters, dimes and Half Dimes and I think it is fun. However, the very small amount of time I've spent trying to VAM Morgans I didn't like for some reason. Is large cent attribution similar to CBQs and CBHs? Just general advice and discussion is what I'm looking for so I can learn a little.

Penny Whimsy is the authority on early large cents from 1793-1814. For large cents 1816-1857 there are a few go to publications. First off would be United States Copper Cents 1816-1857 by Howard Newcomb. It was published in 1945 so it's a little out of date. For the Coronet cents I recommend The Cent Book by John Wright. It is an excellent reference for the middle dates. For the Braided Hair coins I recommend die Varities of United States Large Cents 1840-1857 by J.R. (Bob) Grellman. Another excellent reference.

As above, John Wrights book (1817-1839) and Grellmans book (1840-1857) are what people use. Also Penny Whimsy for early dates. Grellmans and Wrights book each costs approx. $100.

John Wright's CENT book is the best for the middle dates IMO, Grellman's book is best for late date cents, William Noyes now has all the dates covered and his books are excellent, but out of price reach for many casual collectors - a set of all 6 will run almost $800-$1000.
Grellman made several versions of his book, the first was a 3 ring binder in two parts co-authored with Jules Reiver, the second book was a single hardbound volume also with Jules, his last book is the most current one souly authored by Grellman.
If you search this forum you can find a link to Newcomb's book available on-line.
Walter Breen encyclopedia on Large Cents through 1818 is at PCGS.com under resources/books. Very good for earlier dates, lots of information.
