Found this while going through my coin collection. Upon doing some research, I found images of similar coins, but none that were exactly the same as this one (i.e. http://www.coincommunity.com/forum/...IC_ID=30971)

Not sure if this is a fake or not. Any insight would be great...thanks!

The link the original poster was http://www.coincommunity.com/forum/...PIC_ID=30971

From what I can find yours is likely a copy made anywhere from 1900 to 1970. The post on the following thread made by a member named WoodenJefferson seems to support that thinking.

It looks like a brass token that was gold plated at one time.

Yeah, that was my thought - that it was just gold-plated brass. So how much do you think this is valued at? According to a couple posters in those links, it could fetch between $100 and $500. Is this true?

Not unless it is a particularly scarce and collectible type, no. These usually bring in $25-$35 while the gold plating is still intact. Here are some examples of similar types:

The coin in the first post of that link was actually struck in gold.

These brass with gold plating are worth much, much less. I'd say under $10 and with little or no plating one would/could probably find these in a coin store's 25 cent each bins.

Thanks guys - while I'm disappointed this is a (mostly) worthless coin, I appreciate you dispelling some of the mystery behind it!

If it has a bear on it. it is fake, that is one of the first and most obvious marker of replica "cal-gold".
Another is, cal gold always has a denomination. Those are the two basics. Yours is a plated token. The gold plating on these tokens is so thin, it is almost non existent.

Yup, token and not gold.

Being from California, I have some genuine coins.
I've seen hundreds of these unfortunately.
