Folks - this looks like a lamination error to me. I think it is a 1940 nickel. Anything special about this one or just a fairly ho-hum lamination?

It's called an attached lamination, hasn't peeled off, it is more popular than the laminations that have split or peeled off. Nice find! Jeff

TO me it looks like a piece of silver was struck through a scrap onto the coin. Nicer than a lamination.

My first thought was struck through extra metal by the way its shaped and sits on top or one of the oddest / coolest lam I've seen in a while.

Close up may clarify above and date as well as I'd only be guessing the date at this point. Just a rookies opinion. Thanks, Doug.

I have decided to sell this one - if it was less worn I would have kept it. Thanks for the input in helping identify it.

Nice lamination find.. I have to say I think its a 46... if you look at where the curl of a typical 6 would come back to connect to the six to make the circle, you can see a small, very small portion of that showing imo.. However I may be wrong. Just my opinion.

I have taken a little time to think it over, (almost two years). I agree it's a 1946.
