I just received an 1883 IHC I bought on ebay. the photo online was not very detailed. In hand you can barely see these spots, but in photos they are obvious. Keeper, or not?

Thats a nice coin! Looks like carbon spots, but I'd keep it. After spending all that money, why spend it Also, is it just me or are the CCF member usernames larger now?

Keep it if you like it. I love the coin but the carbon spots kinda reduce the wow factor.

Keeper! It is immaculate. The carbon spots are only slightly distracting, the first thing I noticed was the wonderful red color and the grand luster.
Personally, the spots would not bother me.

You have to look to see the spots, they don't hit you in the face. A keeper imo.

Thanks, a keeper it is. Do I see an "L" on the back ribbon? I thought that was only on a 1864.

I like it and would keep it. The "L" was added mid-1864 and was used until the end of the IHC series.

Really, really nice coin. I too would keep it. Those little spots are so small you have to get close to even see them. Possibly a dip in Acetone may help. Otherwise I'd put it in a 2x2 and leave alone.

These carbon spots would be virtually invisible to the naked eye. Nice coin.

I don't mind the spots at all, the coin still has wonderful eye appeal. I think it's perfect just the way it is.

One more thing. The legend around the obverse appears doubled but not the date. see here: Is this a double die?

No, it is Machine Doubling very common on the 1880's IHCs. Also known as "Longacre doubling".
