So I am trying to figure if this would be a good buy (depending on $$$) but what would you say the grade is? I would say probably VF? Thanks for your help!

It is VF. I am unsure, because of pics through plastic, if the coin has any remaining luster.

The coin appears to be harshly cleaned.

Hmmm... I suspected it was cleaned like the description says but what makes it harshly cleaned? I see some of the hairlines but it doesn't seem as bad as some I have seen... I am still working on getting used to what cleaned looks like.

Hairlines = harshly cleaned IMO.
Often hairline scratches are tough to see in photos or scans. Hairlines as clear as those seen with this coin are over the top.
You'll find similar common date/variety/grade CBHs for the same $ that are not harshly cleaned.

Yeah, looking closer you can see this is in pretty bad shape from the cleaning. I wouldn't touch that auction.

Gotcha. So basically even if a coin is cleaned I shouldn't see it on the pictures? I will pass on it though. Thanks for the advice!

You can see it in the pics. The color, hairlines, and lack of real luster give it away.

I know the ship has sailed, but it looks whizzed or polished.

I'll throw my 2 cents in also even though the auction is closed and you decided to pass on it (good decision). If you are wondering what "cleaned" looks like, that coin is a great example. Circulated 180 year old silver will never be this bright unless it has been cleaned. Many seasoned collectors describe the desired look as "crusty", meaning toning and a little dirt and oils in the crevices etc. It shows a lack of tampering with, which is very desirable to most advanced collectors of earlier issues. My avatar is a little grainy, but it is of a Capped Bust Half with the look I personally prefer and strive to attain. Looks a little dark, but it's attractive in hand IMO.
