I would be very interested in hearing your opinions about this early Half Dime. The reverse shows some scratches and a small edge cut, the obverse some minor edge taps as shown. Intensely toned and otherwise nicely detailed.

Thank you,

1803-Half-Dime

Well, first, allow me to wipe the drool off of my keyboard....

Ok, all set! I am by no means an expert in grading draped coinage, but I'd have to say VF+.

Also, as an aside, GERMANICVS, judging by all the coins.youve been posting, you have the most impressive collection I've seen in my very short time collecting. Honestly, a collection like that is what I, and I'm sure many others, strive to have.

Not only is the monetary value sky high, but the historical significance is even higher. Funny, I'm in the U.S. and I have been collecting higher end German coins as of late. Whereas you are in Germany, collecting high end US coinage.

Not that the coins I've been buying can come close to the stature of yours, just drawing hopeful similarities between us.

Sorry for the rant, amazing coin as always!
Rest in Peace

Pytelic, nicely stated and
GERMANICVS, on the reverse that is a strange looking edge cut.
A big for this coin.
Is it a large 8 or small 8?
EF-40
I know nothing just my HO.

EF-45 and the reverse scratch might get it a details grade. Real nice coin!

Even though I suspect weak strike may contribute to the lake of rim detail, I don't think this could make EF. Whether or not a TPG would detail it, I'm not certain. The chance is certainly there. Personally I think it is a VF-30 details coin and very attractive.

The hair detail is just super. I'd lean toward XF40, but agree it's a toss-up on the TPG details issue. I'd show it around to dealers who do a lot of submissions and get their opinions.

EF-40 obverse, VF-30 reverse details. The granular surfaces (particularly the reverse) look like the result of "environmental damage" (corrosion). Presumably the weak denticles are strike-related. The odd defect at 9:30 on the reverse rim looks like solder; makes me wonder if this coin was mounted as a pendant or watch fob at some point. Jewelry use can do strange things to the appearance of a coin. The reverse scratches are also distracting.

Nevertheless, these coins are desirable in almost any condition. Very few collectors have a draped bust Half Dime!

Thank for your comments.
Yes, the scratches and small edge cut do distract, unfortunately. The details are quite nice still, and the surfaces smooth. No corrosion present, just deep toning.

I had some fun attributing this coin using images in the Heritage archives. There are 3 varieties of the 1803 small dime. Two of them with
a large 8 in the date. The small 8 variety is by far the scarcer type with approximately 20% of all extant examples. This one is a large 8 variety, but the scarcer of the two - Valentine 1, rarity 4.

Unusually weak strike around the edges, perhaps that is due to the defective planchet?

I don't know, you may be right, jim.

However, I do see some similarly weakly struck periphery on these examples:

http://coins.ha.com/itm/early-half-.../1147-3388.s

http://coins.ha.com/itm/early-half-.../a/1108-13.s

http://coins.ha.com/itm/early-half-.../1211-3642.s

http://coins.ha.com/itm/early-half-.../1203-3789.s

I think it may be an artifact of the striking conditions - i.e poor strike.

The face hair and shield are all saying high VF low XF. I'm going with VF35 just a beautiful historic coin

Sorry to be a bit of a stick in the mud, but just can't get to EF. So will say high VF details. Beautiful coin.

VF-35 for this one. Although an early draped Half Dime in any condition is quite somethibg. I find myself saying this a lot, yet not quite enough, you really have quite the collection.
