Please look at the mint marks here:
http://varietyvista.com/San%20Franc...20Styles.htm

This, to me, looks almost like MMS-006 because the ball serif is, apparent. However, it does not appear to be an exact representation. I am thinking that it might be inverted, so I have the second photo below showing inverted. Any comments which might help me understand?

Well, the mint mark is not inverted, that's clear.

Are you guys basing your opinion on how it appears or on a comparison with the link I gave? In the link - the full ball is at the top of the MM - not at the bottom as in my example. That is why I think it is inverted. Still the details of the shape do not exactly correspond to the MM in the link. So, I am still a bit confused!

I know that the general appearance would lead you to say that it is not inverted.

Could be wrong and still comparing, but thinking the MMS-004, Trumpet tail, which would be normal orientation.

Circulation wear is tough to call sometimes. Rookies thoughts. Thanks, Doug.

Thanks Halo1st - I had not looked at 004. It still looks to me that the serif on the MM on my coin is a ball type serif which would make it 006. I do think that my coin's MM is suffering from circulation wear - and I think that is what you are suggesting. Still - I think it is closer to a ball type than it is to a trumpet type.

I am thinking that tomorrow I will try some overlays to see if that tells me anything!

This is driving me nuts!

I wonder if there is someone who attributes these kind of things?
Rest in Peace

Try CONECA. The attribution fee is very reasonable.

With the coin contact in circulation, it would be hard to tell what MMS (Mint Mark Style) it is.

coop - why did your photos and my response get deleted?

I found them - on this post:
https://goccf.com/t/232912#232912

They concern this 1946 question!

Am I going crazy?

Thanks, coop - your images are more helpful than what I see on Variety Vista! They list the Ball Serif for the 1946 as "scarce". I am thinking that means around an R-5.

I pulled this coin from circulation over 60 years ago! Only now am I learning enough to understand what I have!

Lots of fun!

For what it is worth, I asked John Wexler to look at this. He attributes it as MMS-004 "Trumpet Tail S". He says it is not inverted.

Good call Halo1st!

Pete, I've heard even the blind squirrel (referring to myself) finds a nut once in a while. Thanks, Doug.

I have heard the saying: "Every once in a while, an old blind hog finds and acorn"

Of course...if you find a duck who can pull a plow...better hook him up!

In todays world the duck would probably be listed on ebay!

...and you would see a CCF Forum post asking if it is real or fake?
