Maybe someone needed one more coin to make up the minimum submission limit for the Economy service tier at ANACS. Or, maybe someone is assembling a grading set of Liberty nickels. Of course, many people have a drastically unrealistic opinion on the grade and/or value of their "old coins". Grading services are happy to separate these folks from their money!

Unless the owner thought it might have been an 'S' mintage, you are right: it doesn't make sense. I don't save nickels order than Buffalo's, but if I did I wouldn't pay more than $1 for it. On second thought, even though I buy lots of lower graded coins, this one is even too low for me. The reverse is fair, but the obverse is much too worn for my taste.

I can't make fun of this because I went one step further. Last year bought two truly ugly common date detail coins from HA.com for $10 for both coins and I think they are worth about a dollar apiece. Here is where it get better, there was a $28 buyers premium and $9 shipping.

Most likely because it meant something to the original submitter. I sent this one in to ANACS so I wouldn't misplace it. It was one of the 2 SLQ's I had as a kid when I first started collecting before I stopped for 20+ years. I know the other one was pre 1925 but lost it in the album as I stared to add new purchases. I remembered this was one of the 2 because of the "circulated cameo" I bought the 1927 in the picture cheap and asked myself the same question at the time but figured it had meant something to someone at sometime so I went for it.

Yeah, that's kinda how I am with my 1983 DDR I found CRHing. I've been meaning to send it off to PCGS, because it completely deserves it IMHO lol.

That 1912 nickel could've once been in the pocket of a Titanic survivor! Some fish story, huh?

I agree that it may have been special to the original owner.

Well, we'll never know. But I ask myself the same question every time I see something on E-bay that goes for a bukc or two.

Maybe the owner had some freebie attributions from ANACS. I have a couple of them from when ANACS messed up a coin attribution I submitted. That reminds me - I haven't used them so maybe I should send in that 2002 messed up zincoln I got in change today.

What if you had a little kid who collected coins and this was his "bestie". You want to make it extra special for him/her so you .....

I too can't figure out why people do that. I've seen so many slabbed coins at coin shows selling for a fraction of what it costs to have it slabbed. In some instances it appears the plastic is worth more than the coin.

I've sent a couple cheapies in to ANACS so they're slabbed like the rest of the collection.
