My 1866 Indian Head cent is the first to be attributed with a broken collar! I purchased this coin from an IHC dealer that specialized in copper coins. He did not notice the features on the rim but I did once I got it home.

I sent it off to Russ and indiancentvarieties.com last week and he contacted me right away with alot of excitement! He has posted photos and the attribution on his site here: http://indianvarieties.com/cents/18...001-rpd-005/

Russ will be adding this variety to a book that he's involved in and I believe he is going to do a write up on the coin as well. I will post that link when it becomes available.

I'm really excited about this attribution and my name is listed on the discovery! Here is my 1866 Indian Head cent (COL-001, RPD-005)

Cool that third side often gets overlooked. Frank Leone did a nice write up on broken collars in his old (and rare) 2 cent times newsletter, he found rim Cuds that moved proving the collar was not always locked into place. Interesting varieties that cover the third side of a coin, usually not as collectible as they are so hard to see in many holders.

I agree that this happens in the marketplace and I agree with this statement. I think it's funny though that varieties that take 20x loop to see would demand more money than this variety that can be seen with the naked eye!

As with any of our coins, it takes the right buyer. It really is a pretty cool coin!

Rim Cuds are not caused by collars or collar breaks. They are caused by broken dies. If you have rim Cuds that "move", you have two dies with similar breaks.

Wasn't this coin pictured on a forum some time in the past? Maybe not this one but some forum. I seem to recall having seen it before.
