Was searching 5 random rolls of clad Jeffs when this one caught my eye; figured it was just a recent 2014 or 2015 nickel, or yet another circulated proof. Imagine my surprise when I saw that "D" mint mark! Not worth a "mint" but a rare find in a roll in this shape.

This thing has PQ that puts some of my Morgans to shame, nice full steps, and only 2 marks on the reverse. Mirror surfaces & pop luster. If it were a Morgan I'd put it at MS65PL, but "technically" this has circulated since I got it from a coin roll...

Not bad for 28 year old coin from a 5c roll.

I don't know what it is, but every so often I find a 1987P or a 1987D that is PL like so.
Rest in Peace

That is a really nice find.

Sorry, I can't offer an opinion on the grade -- I just lurk around here to learn about grading.

Gennerally the portait gets scratched and dinged and Jefferson looks like he's been in a fight or something. To find one that old that isn't all scratched up is really something.

Rest in Peace

clad Jeffs

Nickels are not clad, they are an alloy of nickel and copper.

Drew CLAD refers to a layering of metal over metal while an ALLOY is a mixture of metals mixed in a melted state. Two very different things

Kind of like the difference between chocolate flavored ice cream vs. Vanilla with chocolate syrup on top

SSK, you are very correct from a metallurgical point of view. But I and many other older collectors got into the habit of calling all post 64 coins clad. Except the 40% Kennedys. It is simply easier to type clad Jeffs than rolls of cupro-nickel alloy 5 cent Jefferson pieces. ;) It's sort of like how us Texans call every soft drink a Coke even if it's a Sprite or Dr Pepper. -- AB
