Gold is tough and I don't know that much about it..........as good a time as any to start learning. From what appears to be wear on the hair, I would say this piece is in the au-55 range. If this was a silver coin, I would be quick to say that at least the obverse looks like it has been whizzed, but since it's gold I'll ask what the striation marks were caused from on the obverse? Neat coin, Jaobler!
My take on this coin is that it's virtually mint state but with many small bagmarks. I think ANACS market-graded it to AU-58 due to the marks. Hadleydog, the obverse striations look like a combination of contact marks and possibly hairlines from being wiped with a cloth. Some die polish lines might be present; I'll take a closer look through a microscope next time I have a chance.
The big story on this coin is that it really is proof-like. When tilted at the right angle the devices appear as heavily-frosted cameos against dark mirrored fields. I couldn't capture this effect with my camera. Although the P-L surfaces unfortunately make the marks more visible, this to me is a beautiful coin (one of my favorites!).
