We usually offer a raffle at our monthly meetings of the Fresno Numismatic Society. Our local coin shop gives us good deals (I think) which allows us to get some really nice prizes, even gold on occasion. Our coins this month are a 1914-D gold quarter eagle, 1868 Shield nickel, and 1857 Seated quarter as first, second, and third prizes respectively. The dealer grades these coins as XF, XF-40, and VF-35 (in that order). We also purchased a silver eagle with we will give out as a membership drawing. Our total cost for these four pieces was $309. We will likely sell about $325 worth of raffle tickets, hopefully giving us a small profit for the evening. What do you think of our prizes, did we get a good deal, and how would you judge the accuracy of the dealer grades? Here are the photos which we also post on our club website:

I am with Coinguy. Very nice club! :D (Sorry not too great on grading at the moment esp. gold)

Although each of the three prizes have some minor problem, the technical grading is right on the money. I'd even say he might be a little light on the Seated quarter, although that one's been cleaned, so maybe he made it "market grade" and reduced it for that. In any event the price was very good for those three pieces and I'd say whomever enters into that raffle has some great prizes to have a chance at. I'll be surprised if you don't get a couple people who buy $50 just in hopes of getting the gold alone. Good luck. Wonderful that your dealer, you, and the club all work together to have some fun and help with a little profit too.

Quote: In any event the price was very good for those three pieces Ah, but the $309 also covered the silver Eagle membership prize, so the total price is even better!

I have authenticity concerns with the quarter eagle and the Shield nickel. There seems to be some pimples on the front of the Indian's neck, and there are spikes (tool marks) galore and a rough, grainy surface on the Shield nickel.

I think the tooling marks on the shield nickle are just lots of late stage die cracks, that R in trust could not have lasted much longer!

The Shield nickel is authentic, and typical. Doubling on the 1, big die cracks, uneven strike, filled 8, reverse has 2 cracks above legend + massive trails. I love it. That's one super-fine group of prizes! Sounds like you have an awesome CC.

Good news from my standpoint, not so much for some of our other club members.... I bought $50 worth of tickets rather than my usual $20. I won the first draw for the 1857 quarter. Then another member who routinely buys $50 or even $100 worth of tickets (and very often wins!) got the Shield nickel. Then I came back and scored the gold quarter eagle! Our total ticket sales was $296 meaning we took a loss of $13 which is OK. We had about a $30 profit at the previous month's raffle. Being a charitable sort at heart I decided to donate the 1857 quarter back to the club; we'll use it for one of our silver raffle prizes at our October Fresno coin show. I really just wanted the gold, after all! A good night!
