Before you can say it.....I know the picture is horrible. Its zoomed in and cropped from a larger picture. This was in a "junk silver" lot by a buillon seller on the good ole ebay. This seller does not sell any individual coins outside of Morgan dollars and ASEs. Description says "all coins pictured are what you will receive". The obverse clearly showed a 1916 on this coin, and I can tell there is a mintmark. There was also a decent 1934 D quarter that I need for my Dansco in the lot. Will I get very, very lucky? I had some ebay bucks to spend, so this cost me nothing out of pocket so I though it was worth taking a chance on. If its not, I just have a few more dollars in face to take to the safety deposit box. Let me know what you think. Thanks! Edited by RedRaider 07/13/2015 9:01 pm

By the way, I dont have high hopes, I know the odds are horrible. I'm sure stranger things have happened though.

Just buy it. Worth the risk if you basically don't spend money.

Everyone has to learn that there is very rarely ever any free or ridiculously low priced coins in the collecting world.
Until you buy a few of those "could be" lots, which have the smallest fraction of a percentage chance of being "is", then you just wonder and dream.
I've done it, and I doubt there are many here who wouldn't admit to buying something hoping for the super rare. I would also guess that most of us would further admit that those super rare item(s) turned out to be non-existent.
Still, it's a lot more fun than buying a lottery ticket!

a question for those that are more knowledgeable than me. If it cannot be determined what the mintmark is, is there any acid method that can be used to raise it like can be done with Buffalo nickels?I've never heard of it being done on silver.

Just as an FYI.....I would never buy something with the pure hopes of winning big. I saw this as a way to stack more silver with the chance of something being in the lot. It is a gamble, but the worst outcome is I have $5 face in silver that was purchased with ebay bucks for a little over spot. The lot also included a barber half/walking liberty half/franklin and Kennedy half dollars, SLQ, Silver Washington quarters, Mercury dimes and roosevelts. A nice mix and none of it looked too bad. This coin was by far the most worn.

Look at the way the mm slopes down. No serif on the right side either. I know the odds are leaning toward S, but I think you have a good shot at this one. Worth the gamble if it's in a junk silver lot, IMO.

Good luck! Would be a nice score, still a long shot, but at least you have a shot!

Just curious, what are you going to do if you think you have a '16-D once the coin is in hand? Would a TPG certify it in its current state? Even if it gets a Genuine or AG Details grade, you'd be looking at enough to buy quite a bit more silver. And @grr601, there is no accepted way to acid treat silver coins without doing significantly more damage than nic-a-nic-a-date for nickels. In this case, the best bet is to examine the mintmark under a very strong loupe. Once a coin is this worn, the damage is done, unfortunately.

If it does turn out to be a 16d, it will go in the dansco. I'm only missing the 16d and 21p. Would be a great way to fill it. Again, there is a big "if" here.
Finn, your analysis was how I looked at this. I could not see the serif and the slope is what started putting the thought in my mind. Its still a long shot, but it is a shot. Nothing really to lose here, if its not, it goes in my bag of silver.
