It's attractive but no MS67RB. Grade away!

Hi Ken,

I sure agree with you that it's not a '67!

The color looks a bit suspicious. I have some colorful IHCs that were rejected by ICG because (in their opinion) they had been cleaned and then had naturally retoned. The colors are great but ICG I think was correct to body-bag them. Hopefully nothing like that was done to this coin.

The strike is a little soft at the feather tips, but she's got "4 diamonds" on her ribbon and I don't see any wear. So, she should make unc. I'm thinking the cut on the cheek, the nicks over the date, the dent on the ribbon on the reverse, and the carbon spots will seriously limit the grade. Is that curvy line below the ear a scratch? It looks raised which would suggest a die crack or gouge.

My grading crystal ball says MS-62 RB.

I hope you got it cheap. It's no better than MS63 (maybe 62) (Brown?) and Artificially Toned...definitely a body bag.

Ken, to be honest, IMO, these are coins you want to stay away from unless you got it for a few bucks or so. Sorry, to be so brutal. Your my friend and it's hard to convey this with words in a non-harsh way. Other than just a "fun" piece for others to leer at, it is one that would be very difficult to move to someone else.

By the way, if one were to really stretch and assume it's NT, the carbon spots typically are a big deal killer on copper like this. I discussed this with experts all over, including various grading services, you have to assume that the carbon will continue to grow. If they're just tone spots, it's almost just as bad.

Prethen and Jaobler:

Excellent, I put this up with the hope of getting it beat up and we need honesty so we all can learn. I concur 100%. This was a learning excercise for me and one that I hope others will look at and pick up on the obvious/not-so obvious grading of IHC.

I started coin collecting again in 1/07. I was buying "certified" coins off of ebay and this particular one I paid $113.76. After receiving it and then taking it to my local shops to show off my prize, I was bascially educated on what I thought I had...it wasn't!

With that costly purchase and the 2 Center that was NNC graded, I had about a $200 induction into "BUY THE COIN NOT THE HOLDER"!

After those two "certified" foul-ups, I bought several books and have since educated myself to know what to look for and what I am looking at. I can now say that I can get a pretty good idea of a grade on most types of raw coinage...but it took alot of comparing and studying.

Through this forum, I highly recommend other collectors to analyze and ask questions as we have some members I consider "near experts to experts" in their evaluations and I highly value their opinions, like you two.

Wow...that's a lot of money for that coin. That's unfortunate and I'm sorry about that. Indian cents can be one of the trickiest series' to collect, especially in UNC condition, due to the various ways that people screw around with the surfaces. You have to get used to looking at a LOT of unplayed with specimens before you get a good gut feel for it.

Ya, well it's all good now. It's fun to flash around and still looks nice even though AT. Needless to say I wasn't happy with any TPG coins until I gave them my seal of approval after many months!

Here's one of my Body Bag Indians. Per ICG, it had been cleaned and then naturally retoned. I paid around $50 for it which was too much, but I was hooked by the color. The obverse target toning is really quite striking, perhaps even a bit more vivid than the photo shows. I still like it in spite of its little problem!
