Does the value of modern (post barber) coinage pretty much follow silver spot? For example let's say silver drops to $5 an ounce.. Will I be able to go pick up Mercs for .35 and Liberty halves for $2 (just a rough estimate of melt to get the point across)? Will only the high grades command a premium or would circulated still hold numismatic value in the case of silver prices dropping?

Also what will happen when old timers who hoarded start passing on and the supply of these junk coins goes up (assuming their coins go up for sale)? Do you think the coin values will go way down?

If silver dropped enough (below $1.40 per ounce), I suppose some of the earlier junk silver coins would be worth some percentage more than face value.

Demand should drop, so prices for the lowest grades should mirror bullion pricing. The slightly more scarce coins will hold some numismatic value, but they will go down, too. Not to bullion, but down.

The premium paid over melt on junk silver is an interesting one to follow. Many of the shows around here charge 2 to 4 dollars over spot for junk silver.

If the supply of junk silver were to increase without an increase in demand the premium would dump and junk silver coins would of coarse drop in price as well. I can't see there being a large enough spike in supply of junk silver, in the near future, to have this happen though. Odds are the hording will continue until the price of silver rises high enough for people to want to start parting with their silver.

If silver drops.

My best guess is ... the junk silver boxes would have most
of the same coins that they have today. And the price will
follow the spot price, as it does today.

If you go to enough coin shops you will see lower grade to
mid grade Mercury dimes. Also low grade barbers and Standing
quarters.

The lower to mid grade Morgan's will also come down in
price, but stay a little above the dime, quarter and half
prices.

If the junk silver bucket prices drops way down, then the
prices of some collectors coins will come down too. But
stay above the junk prices.

The last couple years I am seeing some of the modern silver
coins going in to the junk silver buckets. Like silver proof
State Quarters and commemorative dollars. One's that have
been broken out of their OGP holders.

The time to buy these precious metals is when everyone hates them. It is true with all intangible and tangible assets. When you hear commentators making fun of "Gold Bugs" on TV it is time to start to buy them especially in coin form like a Saint-Gaudens for a couple of hundred over the spot price of gold. Of course, you are going to have to hold it for a while most likely. All these fantastic big silver coins getting cheaper and cheaper.

I almost purchased a 1994 POW Commemorative silver dollar yesterday. I picked him up & flipped him over. Raw sporting a $40 price tag. Hardly "spot" LOL

Ive noticed that since silver dropped recently APMEX is actually selling their junk silver for MORE than it was when spot was at $16. I remember the $10 face value rolls would be like 125-135 and now they are on the APMEX site for $145.

So maybe theres a higher demands when people think they can get a deal on it when prices are slipping, so they jack the price up accordingly
